The Andover Recreation Division’s Kid Care Program provides a safe, fun, and engaging after-school experience for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 through games, activities, homework support, outdoor play, and enrichment opportunities. Assistant Group Leaders work under the supervision of a Group Leader and alongside experienced staff to supervise and engage children, support daily activities, encourage positive behavior, and help create a welcoming environment.


The program operates at all five Andover elementary schools. We’ll do our best to place staff at a preferred location, based on program needs and availability. This is an ideal opportunity for students and others interested in education, sports and recreation, childcare, or community-based work who want to build their communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.


Work Schedule

  • Hours available Monday through Friday, with shifts generally available between 3:00/3:30 and 5:30/6:00 p.m.
  • The program operates five days per week, with the flexibility to work the number of days that fits your schedule.
  • Additional hours may be available during school vacations and the summer.

Examples of duties

  • Assist with supervising and engaging elementary-aged children in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.
  • Help lead age-appropriate games, crafts, recreational activities, and enrichment opportunities under the direction of program staff.
  • Support homework time, snack time, outdoor play, and other components of the daily program.
  • Serve as a positive role model and encourage respectful, appropriate behavior.
  • Maintain awareness of participants, assist with attendance and headcounts, and promptly report safety or behavioral concerns to a Group Leader or supervisor.
  • Help prepare, organize, and clean program spaces, equipment, and activity materials.
  • Communicate positively and respectfully with children, families, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Follow all program policies, procedures, and emergency protocols, and assist in responding to incidents and emergencies as directed.
  • Participate in required trainings and staff meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Interest in working with elementary-aged children in a group setting.
  • Responsible, dependable, punctual, and willing to learn.
  • Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate positively and appropriately with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Experience working with children through babysitting, volunteering, coaching, tutoring, camps, or similar activities is helpful but not required.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred, or willingness and ability to obtain certification if required.
  • Must successfully complete all applicable pre-employment requirements.

Supplemental information

The essential functions of this position require the ability to:

  • Remain active and move throughout the program area for extended periods.

  • Participate in and supervise indoor and outdoor activities, as appropriate.

  • Bend, reach, and move between activity areas while supervising children.

  • Occasionally lift and carry program supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Observe children and respond promptly to safety concerns and emergency situations.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with children, families, and staff.
