Reporting to the Director of Administration and Operations (DAO), the African Language Program (ALP) Manager takes chief responsibility for coordinating the administrative and operational tasks for the ALP and provide administrative support to the program's faculty director.
Serves as principal contact and liaison between the director, preceptor, language coach staff (TA/TF), students, Committee on African Studies (CAS) and other ALPs (e.g. MIT, Boston University, Yale University etc.).
Prepares and maintains ALP records and reviews documents to ensure compliance with University and Government's regulations. Communicates problems to DAO.
Bachelor's degree required. Must possess at least 5 years of progressively responsible administrative management experience in an academic or research environment. Education beyond a Bachelor's degree may count towards experience.
Masters Degree preferred. Strong interpersonal and oral communications skills essential, including the ability to deal diplomatically with a wide range of people. Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information. Strong leadership and negotiation skills. Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of constituents, managing change, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines. Demonstrated writing ability, as well as excellent editing and proofreading skills. Knowledge of IT systems and processes and the ability to learn and apply new software applications quickly. Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel. Experience with Open Scholar and HTML preferred. Experience with Harvard University systems and policies is helpful.
The standard schedule is Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm, but the ability to work outside of the standard schedule will be required as dictated by program and business needs.
This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
