Job Description

We're building aircraft that fly faster, further, and to space.

Hypersonix is an Australian aerospace engineering and advanced manufacturing company building hydrogen-powered scramjet aircraft. We work at the bleeding edge of hypersonic technology, delivering aircraft that fly faster, reach further, and open new pathways to space - and we're a small, highly capable team doing work that genuinely matters.

The Opportunity

As an Aerothermal Engineer II, you’ll own the modelling and analysis of aerodynamic and thermodynamic flow fields of hypersonic vehicle components and systems. Working alongside a high-performing team of engineers and designers, you’ll both develop new and execute existing aerothermal analysis methodologies. Your work will play a critical role in ensuring the aerothermal integrity of current and future vehicles, directly contributing to the company’s mission.

This is a rare opportunity to get hands-on with cutting-edge hypersonic technology in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. If you’re driven by innovation, thrive on tackling complex problems, and want the autonomy to make a real impact, we’d love to hear from you.

What you’ll be doing

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform aerodynamic and aerothermal analyses for hypersonic vehicles using analytical methods, design tools and high-fidelity CFD.
  • Build and maintain aerodynamic and thermal databases that underpin vehicle performance and design decisions.
  • Develop and refine aerothermodynamic models, advancing capability across complex design challenges.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure vehicle performance and thermal protection systems meet design requirements.
  • Drive innovation by contributing to new technologies, methods and process improvements in hypersonic design.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and industry developments to inform engineering decisions.
  • Support a safe, high-performance engineering environment, taking accountability for your own safety and that of your team.
  • From time to time, undertake other responsibilities, consistent with skills, qualifications, and experience.

Life at Hypersonix

We're a 60-person company moving fast in one of the most demanding fields in aerospace. The pace is fast, expectations are high and the environment is constantly evolving. The people who thrive here are energised by that — not unsettled by it. You’ll thrive here if you:

  • Take initiative, embrace ownership of your work and keep things moving, especially when the picture isn’t complete.
  • Care about doing things well and getting them done — and learn to balance both.
  • Stay calm and constructive when priorities shift.

What you’ll bring

To hit the ground running in this role, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering or equivalent, with a strong focus in fluids.
  • 3+ years of experience in supersonic or hypersonic flow physics, such as aerodynamic or thermodynamic analysis.
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, boundary layer theory, and heat transfer principles.
  • A proven ability to apply analytical and low-fidelity models to solve engineering problems.
  • Strong technical background in CFD solvers, especially STAR-CCM+, including RANS and Euler simulations.
  • Experience with hypersonic research and development, and new technologies.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong initiative and willingness to tackle complex problems.
  • Ability to obtain any applicable security clearance or background checks.
  • Right to live and work in Australia.

Bonus points for:

  • Master's degree in aerospace engineering or equivalent, with a strong focus in fluids.
  • PhD in hypersonic flow physics or related area.
  • Experience in experimental testing of hypersonic flows.
  • Experience in mechanical or aerospace vehicle design, and the modelling of solids.
  • Experience in modelling coupled thermal/aerodynamic/structural problems.

Ready to Fly Faster?

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary
  • Equity participation
  • Flexible working – we care about output, not hours
  • Funded Professional development
  • Confidential employee assistance program

About Hypersonix Launch Systems

Hypersonix Launch Systems builds and operates hydrogen-fuelled scramjet powered autonomous aircraft for a range of government, defence, aerospace, and commercial customers.

The first hypersonic flyer to launch is DART AE (Additive Engineering). DART AE is a 3.5 metre long hypersonic aircraft that is powered by a single SPARTAN scramjet engine and makes significant use of 3-D printed high temperature metal alloys. It uses hydrogen fuel and will fly at Mach 7.

The launch is part of the HyCAT program by the Defense Innovation Unit. Hypersonix was the first company to be selected for the program in March 2023, targeting a first launch for Q1 2026 in the United States.

Hypersonix is revolutionizing hypersonic flight technology with a cloud-based software-as-a-service digital twin. By combining extensive knowledge and data from atmospheric flight tests, this virtual replica accurately predicts real-world outcomes. It allows rapid and repetitive testing of materials, designs, manufacturing techniques and enables global 3D printing of components through secure additive manufacturing.

Hypersonix product road map also includes VISR, a high-speed suborbital Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and rapid airfreight flyer demonstrator as well as Delta Velos Orbiter for small satellite launch in a non-ballistic trajectory.
