Job Description

Description

Position:

CUBRC’s Ahmic Aerospace location is seeking a hands-on technician to support the fabrication and integration of precision sensors for extreme aerospace test environments. This role involves fine-scale work with thermocouples, micro wiring, and sensor assemblies used in cutting-edge hypersonic research.

Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate high-precision coaxial thermocouples using micro-TIG welding, rotary swaging, and ceramic airbrushing on fine-gauge wires (30–40 AWG)
  • Operate vacuum deposition systems (magnetron sputtering) to apply controlled thin-film layers to sensor assemblies
  • Instrument and build up wind tunnel test articles by installing, aligning, potting, and securing sensors with high precision
  • Route, label, and solder micro-scale wire and cable assemblies, including integration of miniature connectors
  • Perform electronic checkout and validation of sensor installations to ensure functionality prior to wind tunnel testing
  • Assist with static load calibration of complex force measurement systems, calibrate force measurement balances, and inspect subsystem equipment

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with fine-scale soldering (down to 40 AWG wire, 0.010” dia. solder points) and cable preparation
  • Hands-on proficiency with micro-TIG welding, swaging, or vacuum deposition systems preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for working with delicate components and small geometries
  • Familiarity with instrumentation, electronic checkout, and basic PCB assembly
  • Ability to interpret and follow detailed work instructions, technical drawings, and engineering specifications
  • Personal Attributes: Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a small team environment. Well organized, flexible, and capable of effectively prioritizing multidisciplinary tasks. Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Work Environment:

CUBRC

About CUBRC

Since CUBRC’s emergence in 1983, the company has grown from a small facilitator of research into a fully staffed, highly respected, scientifically crucial entity. While it is our mission to make a positive technological and economic impact on Western New York, the influences of our work stretch far beyond the WNY region by making significant technology contributions to our nation as a whole.

The technologies and facilities of CUBRC date back to the late 1950s, playing a major role in the development and testing of NASA’s Gemini and Apollo space capsules, the U.S. Space Shuttle as well as many other vehicles that travel through Earth’s atmosphere at speeds much greater than that of sound.

More recently, CUBRC has continued its pioneering work in the area of aeronautics by expanding and enhancing our Hypervelocity research facilities into a unique research and test capability, available nowhere else in the world. In 1988, CUBRC expanded our technology to reach beyond aeronautics. CUBRC has made tremendous contributions in defending our country against the effects of biological and chemical agents, improving clinical diagnostic instruments that test for diseases, helping to save lives on streets and highways, and helping people make critical decisions through the development of advanced information systems designed to provide crucial information extracted from massive, disparate sources of data.

CUBRC offers exciting challenges where ideas and skills are valued and individual contributions are respected, recognized, and rewarded. Continually adapting and expanding, CUBRC remains invested in the power of technology, of first-rate facilities, and of innovative, highly motivated minds to impact and benefit all humankind.
