The purpose of Kaupapa Kura Taiao group is to support the business operations and facilitate transformational change in the EPA, guided by te ao Māori and excellent regulatory practice aligned with He Whetū Mārama.
Kaupapa Kura Taiao is made up of two business units each with specialist expertise that
work across the EPA:
Māori Engagement and Operations champions He Whetū Mārama and the EPA’s Mātauranga Framework and leads Māori engagement to enable effective Māori participation in the EPA's policies, processes and decisions.
Regulatory Systems develops and improves EPA's environmental legislation, and regulatory direction, processes, and capability.
He Whetū Mārama is the framework that guides the EPA in the undertaking of its statutory
and other obligations to Māori. It is based on our EPA wawata which recognises that the
unique relationship of Māori to the environment informs EPA decision making.
This is a fixed term role for 6 months. This role is based in our Wellington office. While we're happy to consider work-from-home arrangements, this role is not designed for full-time remote working.
The purpose of the Advisor Māori is to support and deliver initiatives that ensure EPA Policy, process and decision-making is fully and effectively informed by Māori perspectives. The Advisor is also expected to have an understanding the EPA’s obligations to Māori under our environmental legislation, including the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf Act, Resource Management Act and in conjunction with the Emissions Trading Scheme Group the Climate Change Response Act.
This role reports to the Kaiwhakahaere Tūhonohono Tāngata - Manager Māori Engagement.
We are looking for someonewith a range of skills and experience – if you have some or all of the below, we would love to hear from you
Good understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and other Māori interests in the natural resources or regulatory sector
Understanding of Tikanga and Mātauranga Māori
Some understanding of machinery of government, systems, and tools (desirable).
Good analytical and writing skills
Good MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) applications skills
Beginner level fluency in tereo Māori (desirable)
Working knowledge of database or information management (desirable)
Entry level experience in a planning or policy development role preferred
Experience in working with Māori and/or issues of interest to Māori
Some experience in analytical writing and/or research

This is the full salary range. Appointments are made within the range depending on skills and experience.
