The Opportunity (Vacancy: Replacement)

Reporting directly to the Communications Manager, this role is responsible for the conceptualization, planning, design and creation of a wide range of communication material and campaigns. The Advisor researches, recommends and provides counsel to clients across the corporation. The Advisor is a collaborator and creative thinker who has the ability to manage multiple projects. The Advisor provides support across several platforms, including online and digital channels. Working with an assigned client portfolio, the Advisor develops and oversees communications plans and provides strategic advice. The Advisor supports the Manager regarding matters of a sensitive, contentious or confidential nature and develops and implements communications plans and messages. The Advisor prepares media responses for the Manager and the Office of the Mayor, as required.

As the Advisor, Communications, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • Create, implement and oversee communications plans and marketing strategies for high-priority projects, that align to department business plans, the Council Work Plan and the strategic plan ensuring milestones are identified, and deadlines are met
  • Provide strategic communications, marketing and public engagement advice to clients.
  • Create content, for use in communications tools, such as social media, digital and print communications
  • Write media releases, backgrounders, FAQs or scripts; fact check and proof-read in accordance to Canadian Press Style
  • Lead cross-departmental leadership to resolve bottlenecks and negotiate resources for UAT sessions developing comprehensive test scripts with departmental leads to identify bugs and validate system functionality.
  • Actively participate in weekly update meetings with Communications and check-in meetings with clients as needed
  • Provide guidance to short-term contracted staff, including technical direction, training recommendations, coaching and mentoring
  • Develop, maintain and work to improve job related standard operating procedures
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an experienced professional with a post-secondary diploma in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or closely related field. Our ideal candidate has a minimum of three (3) years related experience in a communications advisor role preferably in a municipal setting and minimum of three (3) years related experience in corporate communications including issues management, crisis communications, media relations, communications planning, community engagement, social media planning and execution, email marketing, analytics, content management systems, and legislative requirements.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to exercise significant discretion and sensitivity involving regular access to confidential data. We are seeking an individual who has demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills involving regular development of new and improved methods.

The successful candidate for Advisor, Communications, will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).

This position offers an hourly range of $54.49 to $68.11

Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check, and proof of qualifications will be required of any successful candidate(s) for this position.
