Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems is seeking an Advanced Systems Engineer 1 with a strong hardware engineering focus to support the Payload Control System as well as provide hardware engineering support across multiple programs, including SWFTS. This position combines systems engineering responsibilities across the full development lifecycle with hands-on hardware evaluation, selection, and benchmarking of high-performance computing systems. The successful candidate will identify and resolve system design weaknesses, support accreditation and test activities, and drive hardware selection decisions by establishing vendor relationships, executing rigorous SWaP testing, and participating in technology insertion efforts. The ideal candidate works with minimal direction, drives tasks to closure, and is comfortable contributing to multiple programs simultaneously in a dynamic, mission-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

Systems Engineering –

  • Identify, analyze, and resolve system design weaknesses across the Payload Control System architecture
  • Develop system security documentation for both new and fielded information systems
  • Provide system accreditation/certification evaluation and test support
  • Generate technical engineering products using applicable standards, processes, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
  • Participate in requirements analysis, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis, system design, trade studies, systems integration, and verification testing
  • Perform interface definition studies of system components and products
  • Research and analyze vendor products, COTS components, GFE/CFE/BFE, specifications, and technical manuals to determine design feasibility
  • Support the shaping of future Payload Control products by contributing to frameworks used across multiple systems

Hardware Engineering Support –

  • Lead hardware selection activities for the SWFTS program, evaluating options based on performance, cost, and program requirements
  • Build, configure, and validate computer systems for use in mission-critical environments
  • Design and execute critical item tests and benchmark high-performance computing systems using open-source tools
  • Establish and maintain vendor relationships to solicit hardware samples and evaluate emerging technologies
  • Participate in technology insertion activities, identifying opportunities to refresh and improve program hardware
  • Collaborate with multiple programs to develop hardware test plans and evaluation criteria
  • Conduct Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) testing and analysis to provide programs with the data needed to make informed hardware selection decisions
  • Document test results and provide clear, actionable recommendations to program stakeholders

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient understanding and application of systems engineering principles, concepts, and theories
  • Strong background in building, configuring, and troubleshooting computer systems and high-performance computing hardware
  • Experience running critical item tests and benchmarking systems using open-source tools
  • Proficient use of requirements management and systems modeling tools
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical findings and recommendations
  • Ability to work with minimal direction, manage multiple priorities, and drive tasks to closure

General Dynamics Mission Systems

About General Dynamics Mission Systems

At General Dynamics Mission Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, we develop mission critical C4ISR solutions across the land, sea, air, space and cyber domains, but that doesn’t tell our whole story.

When downed pilots are isolated in enemy territory, our equipment gives them a lifeline to call home. When a student opens a textbook to learn about the universe, they’re looking at data and pictures sent using our technology. When the government needs to share crucial top-secret information, our products help them keep this information out of the wrong hands. When sailors need to locate underwater mines, our technology allows them to find explosives with unmanned underwater vehicles.

Delivering C4ISR technology is what we do but we think why we do it is more important.
