The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine has a 1.0 FTE faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA).Under the direction of the full-time faculty, this position provides outpatient and inpatient medical at the University of Colorado Hospital for the Comprehensive Thoracic Aortic Disease (CTAD) program. The position is non-surgical with expectations of four 10 hour shifts a week. The candidate may also engage in similar duties for other cardiac surgery patients who are not part of the CTAD program as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical and patient care duties include
•Discussions with patients regarding information about the aortic program, education on their disease processes and management of aortic disease.
•Ordering and interpreting testing including CT angiography of aorta, echocardiograms and labs.
•Reviewing medical records to determine if appropriate for clinic and if any additional tests needed prior to clinic appointment.
•Prescribing medications as needed, including pre-procedure medications.
•Conducting peer to peer review or writing medical necessity letters with insurance companies for pre-authorization of tests as appropriate.
•Communicating with referring providers regarding patient referrals.
•Independently performing age appropriate history and physical examinations for complex acute, critical and chronically ill patients
•Round on inpatients and perform inpatient consults as needed
•Collaboration with team members during weekly multi-disciplinary aortic conference to finalize patient plans and order tests and referrals as needed.
•Accurate and efficient documentation in EPIC system.
•Contacting referring physicians/PCP for any other medical issues that may have been discovered or referring patient to appropriate specialty/provider as needed
•Facilitating staff, patient and family decision making by providing appropriate education about disease process.
Research duties include
•Participating in research in conjunction with faculty expectations
•Tracking patient outcomes/data
•Assisting with database accuracy and management

•Compliance with hospital protocols/standards.
•Attending departmental meetings on a regular basis
•Practice in a fiscally responsible manner
•80% Clinical duties, 20% Research duties
•Dynamic team member with interpersonal and communication skills needed to work with other providers, peers, nurses, RT, social workers, care managers, medical assistants, etc.
Typical Physical Demands The NP/PA position requires the ability to handle and lift patients and operate required equipment. The position may also require a stationary position or movement for extended periods as required during the provision of services. This position requires frequent communication and must be able to exchange accurate information. The NP/PA may also be exposed to communicable diseases and bodily fluids, and it is expected that the candidate will be appropriately knowledgeable regarding universal safety precautions.
Typical Working ConditionsThis is a clinic based practice.There may be exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to the clinical environment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
•Prior experience coordinating a multi-disciplinary clinical program
•Prior experience with EPIC
•Prior experience with interpreting CT scans
•Experience in an inpatient surgical subspecialty

•Knowledge of the professional medical and surgical practice to give and evaluate patient care in the thoracic aortic aneurysm clinic.

•Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine and surgery to provide on-going patient care.
•Skill in taking medical history, assessing medical condition and interpreting findings.
•Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
•Skill in developing, maintaining, and implementing department quality improvement protocols.
•Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and their family members, medical staff, residents, fellows, medical students, and the public.
•Ability to maintain quality control standards.
•Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
•Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
•Ability to communicate clearly as an integral member of a team.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:
$112,000 to $160,000
