Position Summary

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is seeking one full-time Pediatric Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant. We are looking for candidates who have an interest in pediatric oncology and are willing to participate in a team-oriented, group practice that serves a culturally diverse population. The Division is affiliated with the NCI-designated UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, is an NCI MB-CCOP, and is an active participant in the Children’s Oncology Group. We see 90-100 new oncology patients annually, the majority of whom are enrolled on clinical trials or receive care in line with standard of care practices. The practitioner will be a staff member of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology division within the School of Medicine at UNM, and will work under the supervision of the division faculty. With on-the-job training and additional experience, the candidate will develop a large degree of independence in managing the clinical care of non-emergency pediatric oncology patients. Certification must be obtained from the UNM HRRC for participation of research involving human subjects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the attending physician, works collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary healthcare team and fulfills the duties listed below:

  1. Performs disease and/or protocol appropriate medical examinations and evaluations.
  2. Assists in the ordering and interpretation of diagnostic tests and in assigning appropriate diagnoses and treatment, monitoring and follow-up, identification of need for ancillary consultations, and health education for children having cancer diagnoses.
  3. Obtains patient histories and develops patient care charts, ensuring completeness and accuracy of data for routine patient care as well as for purposes of research and adherence to clinical trials requirements.
  4. Provides health education to students, families, and/or community health practitioners and groups within our specialty area of pediatric oncology.
  5. Supervises and/or coordinates the activities of patient care and/or support staff, to specifically include activities surrounding the provision of chemotherapy to children and young adults.
  6. May participate in planning programs and in developing specific health policies and procedures.
  7. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
  • Must maintain certification status.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.
Certification/Licensure
Eligible for New Mexico certification as a Physician's Assistant
OR
State of New Mexico Certified Nurse Practitioner or certification pending, as documented by temporary certificate.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of clinical experience in pediatric oncology nursing and/or evidence for certification in pediatric oncology nursing (CPON).
  • A willingness to become proficient in lumbar punctures, bone marrow aspirations and biopsies in children.
  • Teaching and clinical research experience.
