The Adult Civilian Inpatient Psychiatry Service provides acute and intermediate level treatment for patients with a variety of psychiatric conditions, including many with severe and persistent mental illness and those who are chronically underserved and marginalizedThe service operates across multiple units, totaling nearly 200 beds, all of which are co-located within the general hospitalUnits are staffed primarily by attending psychiatrists who work alongside a close-knit team of psychologists, creative arts therapists, social workers, nurses, and ancillary staff members, as well as numerous medical and other consultantsThe inpatient teams collaborate to provide care across severalmodalities that include pharmacotherapy, individual and group psychotherapy, recreational therapy, pet therapy, and electroconvulsive therapyThe service also provides specialized treatment for a number of patient populations, including patients with a high degree of medical complexity, patients with co-occurring substance use disorders, and patients who would benefit from culturally congruent care
The Unit Chief is the clinical and operational leader of an individual unit, which is comprised of approximately 30 beds and staffed by 3 attending psychiatrists, including the Unit ChiefThe Unit Chief is responsible fordirect patient care, as well as the management of unit workflow, interdisciplinary rounds, and oversight of patient careThe Unit Chief provides training and supervision to other attending physicians on the unit, serves as primary physician liaison for other disciplines on the unit, and reports directly to the Division Director of the Adult Civilian Inpatient Psychiatry Service
The Unit Chief role is 0.1 FTE, with the remaining 0.9 FTE spent as a clinical attending physician providing care on the inpatient unit
Specific Unit Chief Responsibilities include:
Leadership during daily interdisciplinary rounds
Oversight of patient assignment and attending physician and psychologist workload
Oversight of clinical care quality on the unit, including treatment decisions, length of stay, and disposition planning
Frequent communication with all unit disciplines and their respective leadership
Development and/or implementation of quality and performance improvement projects
Coordination of time off amongst unit attendings to ensure consistent coverage
Regularly meeting with the Division Director
Ensuring compliance with system and hospital policies, as well as applicable regulatory requirements.
Inpatient attending physician responsibilities include:
Direct provision of care to patients throughout the course of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization
Close collaboration with other disciplines to provide patient-centered and comprehensive treatment in the hospital
Active communication with outpatient providers and city/state/community agencies as indicated to ensure collaborative care during hospitalization and after discharge
Consultation with medicine and other services as needed during hospitalization
Timely and thorough completion of all required documentation as required by the hospital and by state and regulatory standards
Completion of court applications as indicated, including those for treatment over objection and assisted outpatient treatment, and testimony in mental hygiene court
Supervision and teaching of trainees as assigned.
Hours are Monday through Friday (excepting holidays), 9:00am-5:00pmThere is no required after hours or weekend call. There are opportunities to participate in coverage work outside of the salaried hours for additional compensation.
A Unit Chief candidate must have an MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school, board certificationor board eligibility with expectation of certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), and a current New York State medical license and DEA registration.
The preferred Unit Chief candidate will have at least 3 years of clinical inpatient experience and at least 1 year of leadership experience in a clinical setting; strong clinical, operational, organizational, and supervisory skills; excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills; commitment to patient-centered, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed care; and proficiency with electronic medical records and standard computer applications.
