
Job Title: Adult Acute Speech and Language Therapist (Locum)
Banding: Band 6–7
Location: Wrexham Maelor Hospital, Wrexham
Start Date: ASAP
Pay Rate: £24.00–£27.00 per hour
Working Hours: Part-time (flexible) – up to full-time considered
Contract Length: 3 months initially
We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Adult Acute Speech and Language Therapist to provide locum support to the acute service at Wrexham Maelor Hospital This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established acute medical SLT team within a busy hospital environment.
The post holder will be responsible for responding to acute adult referrals across a range of medical and surgical wards, with the majority of the caseload focused on dysphagia assessment and management, alongside some communication referrals. Stroke referrals are managed by a separate specialist stroke team.
This role is suitable for a Band 6 SLT who is independent with dysphagia, with clinical oversight and support provided by an on-site Band 7 SLT and the Deputy Head of Speech and Language Therapy
While full-time availability (Monday to Friday) is preferred, flexible or part-time hours will be considered, and applications from more than one part-time therapist are welcome.
In this role, you will:
Assess, diagnose, and manage adults with dysphagia across acute medical and surgical wards.
Provide assessment and intervention for communication needs as required.
Make evidence-based clinical recommendations to support safe swallowing and communication.
Work collaboratively within the acute SLT team and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in line with professional and organisational standards.
Work to an agreed individualised job plan, aligned with a generic Band 6 job description.
To be considered for this role, you must have:
A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
HCPC registration and eligibility for RCSLT membership
Proven experience working with adult acute patients
Independent dysphagia competency (essential).
Strong clinical reasoning, communication, and organisational skills.
