Job Description

About RSPCA Queensland

For nearly 140 years, RSPCA Queensland has been a leading animal welfare charity, dedicated to improving the lives of animals - whether domestic, farmed, or native. We care for over 42,000 animals annually, relying on the generosity of animal lovers like you to fund 91% of our life-changing services.

Our Purpose: We exist for animals to live better lives.

About the Role

Join RSPCA Queensland as an Adoption and Rehoming Officer, where compassion and connection are at the heart of everything you do. You’ll be part of a dedicated team helping people and animals find their perfect match - guiding families through adoption journeys and supporting pet owners with empathy and understanding.

This is a dynamic role that blends customer service, animal care and problem-solving. Every day is different - one moment you’ll be counselling a potential adopter, the next you’ll be helping an animal start a new chapter. You’ll stay calm under pressure, think on your feet, and always lead with kindness to create positive experiences for both people and pets.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who thrives in a people-focused environment - someone who can balance heart and head in equal measure. You’re the kind of person who can stay calm and composed in busy moments, think on your feet, and communicate with clarity and care. You build trust easily, adapt quickly, and bring warmth to every interaction - whether that’s with a teammate, a customer, or a wagging tail.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the smooth execution of adoption and intake programs.
  • Provide kind, empathic service during emotionally charged customer interactions.
  • Deliver exceptional pre and post-adoption counselling and support.
  • Screen, assess and action surrender and adoption applications.
  • Handle animals confidently through intake and rehoming processes.
  • Collaborate with shelter, veterinary, behaviour and inspectorate teams.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure legislative compliance.
  • Support and guide team members and volunteers.
  • Contribute to uplifting successful animal outcomes and achieving KPIs.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

  • 2–3 years’ experience in a customer-focused or similar environment.
  • 2+ years’ experience in animal care or welfare.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Sound knowledge of animal behaviour and welfare practices.
  • Exceptional organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to perform physical duties (handling up to 10kg).
  • Understanding of animal welfare legislation (or willingness to learn).
  • Experience in adoption or rehoming programs will be highly regarded.

Why Join Us?

  • Comprehensive Support: Enjoy 8 weeks of paid parental leave, flexible working arrangements, study leave, and even leave for your furry companions. We also provide access to counselling and mental health services.
  • Employee Perks: From free on-site parking to exclusive discounts, novated leases, free pet vaccines, and 50% off Royal Canin pet food, we’ve got you covered! You can also adopt a new furry friend with free adoption options.
  • Professional Growth: Access expansive learning and development programs to help you elevate your career and skill set.
  • Purpose-Driven Impact: Be part of a mission-driven organisation where every task makes a tangible difference to animal welfare.

At RSPCA Qld, we encourage you to grow your skills, expand your responsibilities, and explore different career pathways. By enhancing your qualifications and capabilities, you can take advantage of internal opportunities across our many departments - from animal care to operations, outreach, and more.
