
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Admissions and working closely with the Assistant Director of Recruitment, the Admissions Counselor is responsible for recruiting and counseling prospective students, families and college counselors through the application, review, and financial aid process and acts as a liaison between the Admissions office and the School of Music.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Cultivate a holistic comprehension of the various schools’ mission statements, programs, curricula and artistic vision and how these mesh with CalArts as an Institute.
• Actively research, seek out and/or strengthen relationships with music programs and schools across the country and in assigned recruitment territories, seek new and currently relevant methods of reaching out to prospective students beyond traditional school visits and fairs.
• Represent and discuss all aspects of the Institute at college fairs, high school events, visual and performing arts classes and regional recruitment receptions.
• Contact teachers and counselors at secondary schools and community colleges to arrange for visits.
• Conduct weekly on-campus information sessions and tours of CalArts.
• Advise students and families on the School of Music programs, application and portfolio/audition submission processes.
• Work with Associate Dean of School of Music to plan, coordinate and staff School of Music auditions.
• Work closely with the Admissions Review Coordinator and Admissions Operations and Communications Manager to assure accurate and timely processing of submitted applications and portfolios/auditions.
• Aid in the processing of disseminating portfolio/audition and application materials to appropriate faculty.
• Maintain regular contact with all applicants and students accepted to the School of Music.
• Aid in the planning and facilitation of special events such as Open Houses, Accepted Students Day and regional events.
• Maintain a close working relationship with the CalArts community particularly with Executive Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management, Assistant Director of Recruitment & co-workers, School of Music Dean and Associate Dean, VP of Enrollment Management and Program Directors.
• Work some evenings and weekends and have the ability to travel locally or remotely for up to 2 weeks at a time.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
• Excellent communication, presentation and public speaking skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Active interest in and awareness of contemporary music practices.
• Comfortable speaking about visual and performing arts programs to a wide range of constituencies
• Ability to provide portfolio/audition feedback and critique for programs in music
• Social networking and computer skills, including experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Keynote and PowerPoint.
EDUCATION:
• Bachelor’s degree in Music is preferred
EXPERIENCE:
• Arts admissions experience preferred
