Department: Office of Admissions

Employment Type: Full-Time, 12-Month

Salary: $33,000–$40,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications

Reports To: Senior Director of Admissions

Workweek: 40 hours per week

Employment Status: Exempt

The Admissions Counselor plays an important role in student recruitment, admissions counseling, application evaluation, and enrollment outreach.

What We’re Looking For

Ferrum College is seeking an Admissions Counselor to recruit first-year, transfer, and graduate students through on- and off-campus recruitment activities. The position serves as the primary point of contact for an assigned recruitment region and participates in recruitment travel, application review, student counseling, and office initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for an assigned recruitment region, responding promptly to prospective students, families, and high school counselors through email, phone, online inquiries, and in-person interactions.
  • Represent Ferrum College positively at high school visits, college fairs, on-campus recruitment events, and panel discussions.
  • Deliver presentations regarding Ferrum College’s academic programs, student life, and admissions process.
  • Guide prospective students and their families through the admissions process, including application procedures, course selection, and potential academic programs aligned with career goals.
  • Evaluate first-year, transfer, and graduate applications for an assigned recruitment region and make admissions recommendations.
  • Analyze transcripts and educational records while considering diverse educational systems and grading scales.
  • Provide guidance and alternative enrollment pathways to applicants who are not initially offered admission and support students through the reconsideration process.
  • Utilize Ferrum College’s admissions software to manage application data, track communications, and maintain accurate records.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Admissions to develop and implement strategic recruitment travel plans and identify new recruitment markets.
  • Manage recruitment travel, including scheduling visits, booking accommodations, coordinating logistics, and documenting event attendance and outcomes.
  • Engage prospective students through virtual platforms, including Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Oversee one or more office initiatives, which may include Counselor Outreach Programs, Regional Recruitment Events, Scholarships, or Student Recruitment Initiatives.
  • Supervise student volunteers by providing mentorship, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Serve on internal committees and working groups as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated experience in undergraduate or graduate admissions or a related field.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
