Established in 1970, Southside Virginia Community College ( SVCC) is one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System, with seven locations across several counties, including Brunswick, Charlotte, Nottoway, Mecklenburg, Greensville, and Halifax. Help students explore the world’s major religious traditions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, through a comparative and cultural lens.

Join the Southside Virginia Community College faculty and teach REL 230 Religions of the World. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course that introduces the major religions of the world, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. The successful candidate must be committed to SVCC’s mission to provide high-quality education to the Southside Virginia community.

Applications will be received, reviewed, and considered continuously until needed positions are filled.

Course Content & Specific Duties:
  • Introduce the major world religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
  • Focus on the origins, history, and basic beliefs of these faith traditions.
  • Instruct students on the values, ethics, and practices associated with each major religion.
  • Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring high-quality course materials align with college standards.
  • Maintain engagement through the college’s Canvas Learning Management System ( LMS) for the online portion of the course.
  • Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and necessary departments as needed to support academic success.



Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Religious Studies, Theology, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams
  • Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments
  • Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success

Additional Considerations
  • Teaching experience at the college level, specifically with face-to-face and online/hybrid modalities.
  • Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom and Canvas Learning Management System ( LMS).
  • Experience working with community college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.
