Saint Joseph's University's Department of English and Writing has an ongoing need for highly qualified adjunct faculty to staff a variety of courses each semester at SJU's Hawk Hill campus. Course assignments will likely focus on first-year writing courses but may include upper-level courses in specialized courses like professional and organizational writing, public speaking, creative writing, literature, etc. Please submit a cover letter, cv/resume and statement of teaching philosophy with your application.
Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) offers a wide variety of bachelor's, master's, doctoral, associate and certificate programs. With a commitment to personalized attention through a low faculty to student ratio, SJU may call on the expertise of adjunct instructors to complement the work of full-time faculty across all of its colleges and schools.

SJU appoints part-time, non-tenure track adjunct instructors on a semester-to-semester basis with no guarantee of consecutive appointments. Re-appointment is based on university need, student enrollment, and satisfactory performance. Applicants for these positions are screened on an as-needed basis throughout the academic year. Teaching responsibilities are assigned by the department chair. Compensation for adjunct instructors is commensurate with educational credentials, professional, experience and instructional background. Adjunct instructors are bound to the terms and conditions of employment at Saint Joseph’s University, including but not limited to the Faculty Handbook. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide support and guidance to students

  • Instruct an assigned course providing syllabi and other instructional materials

  • Use of university learning management systems to deliver instruction

  • Teaching a specified course according to the Department of English and Writing guidelines.

  • Providing support and guidance to students.

  • Using the university learning management systems to deliver instruction.

  • Holding regular office hours.

  • Part-time adjunct faculty may instruct one or two courses each semester on an as-needed basis. The primary introductory course assignment will be ENG 101, The Craft of Language.

  • Reporting mid-semester and final grades electronically.

  • Participating in departmental course assessment as needed.

  • Introductory courses are typically offered during the day, although evening or online courses may be available. Courses may be held on the Hawk Hill or University City campuses depending on departmental need.

  • Knowledge of writing pedagogy is essential to teach these courses. The ability to teach in multiple modalities (face-to-face, online remote synchronous, online asynchronous) would be helpful but not a requirement.

Secondary Responsibilities include:

  • Occasional meetings with the Department Chair and other faculty members to discuss pedagogical issues.

  • Cooperation with course coordinators or other program faculty to assure quality and consistency across the program.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's Degree in English or related field.

  • Access to up-to-date technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ABD or PhD in Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, or Creative Writing.

  • Previous teaching experience.

  • Willingness to be flexible in class scheduling.

  • Facility with hybrid and online modes of instruction.

Physical and Other Requirements

  • May require standing for long periods of time

  • May require talking for long periods of time

  • May require carrying course materials
