Job Description

Title: Adjunct Dance Teacher

Reports to: Director of Performing Arts / Dance Program Director

Schedule/travel: Part-time adjunct faculty, academic year

FLSA: Non-exempt

Classification: Staff

Adjunct Dance Teacher provides high-quality dance instruction by fostering a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. The position involves teaching one or more dance disciplines, which may include ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, and other dance styles based on program needs and the instructor’s expertise. Adjunct Dance Teacher inspires students to develop technical proficiency, artistic expression, creativity, discipline, and confidence through movement and performance. The position may include preparing students for performances, showcases, and other school events.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Teach assigned dance classes in one or more disciplines, including ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, and other styles as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans that promote technical skill development, creativity, artistry, and physical well-being.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that encourages participation and personal growth.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to support individual development.
  • Maintain appropriate classroom management and uphold school expectations for student conduct.
  • Prepare students for performances, demonstrations, showcases, and other school-related events as assigned.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Performing Arts Department to support departmental goals and programming.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel regarding student progress and performance expectations when appropriate.
  • Ensure that dance studios, equipment, and instructional materials are maintained in a safe and organized manner.
  • Periodically available for meetings with the dance director and other dance staff.
  • Support the mission and values of the School and contribute positively to the community.

Ideal candidate:

  • Experience working in an independent school, boarding school, or similar educational environment.
  • Choreography and performance production experience.
  • Ability to contribute to the broader arts community through performances, workshops, or special programs.
  • Passion for mentoring and supporting the artistic growth of young people.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Dance, Performing Arts, Education, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional training and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching dance to adolescents in a school, studio, collegiate, or professional setting.
  • Strong knowledge of one or more dance disciplines, with the ability to teach multiple styles preferred.
  • Ability to engage and motivate students with varying levels of experience and ability.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification if required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to demonstrate dance techniques and movements.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stretch, and participate in physical activity for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and instructional materials as needed.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of post-offer, pre-employment criminal background checks and drug test.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as required by the athletic schedule.
  • Work is performed on a smoke-free campus.
