About Us:
The ADHD Continuing Care Prescriber is responsible for providing ongoing prescribing and monitoring for adults with ADHD, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care. The role focuses on maintaining continuity of treatment through regular medication reviews, clinical monitoring, and the management of patients whose shared care arrangements with their GP have been declined or are otherwise unavailable.
This role does not include the initiation or titration of ADHD medication Patients will enter the service following assessment and stabilisation, and the post holder will be responsible for ongoing prescribing, monitoring treatment effectiveness, managing side effects, and supporting long-term medication adherence. Any decisions relating to treatment initiation, titration, or complex clinical management will be escalated in line with established clinical pathways.
Working within NICE guidelines, Psychiatry UK policies, and clinical governance frameworks, the post holder will work closely with Consultant Psychiatrists and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care, manage clinical risk, and ensure patient safety.
The role involves managing repeat prescribing processes using both electronic and paper-based systems, requiring excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within structured prescribing workflows.
This position offers a clear development pathway for clinicians wishing to progress within ADHD services, with training and exposure to medication titration processes to support progression into a Specialist Prescriber role.
This is a home-based position with flexibility in line with Psychiatry UK's flexitime principles. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or other work-related activities.
As our ADHD Ongoing Care Prescriber, you will:
Provide safe, evidence-based prescribing for adult ADHD in line with NICE, Psychiatry UK, and RPS prescribing standards.
Manage ongoing patient care, including medication reviews, adherence monitoring, and side-effect management.
Respond to medication-related patient queries through secure communication channels with clear, supportive, and clinically appropriate advice.
Prescribe independently or as a supplementary prescriber within scope of practice, seeking senior clinical support when required.
Work collaboratively with prescribers, psychiatrists, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care.
Conduct risk assessments, identify safeguarding concerns, and escalate issues in accordance with organisational policies.
Maintain accurate, confidential, and legally compliant clinical records using digital systems.
Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and prescribing reviews to support clinical governance.
Engage in clinical supervision, team learning, and continuous professional development to maintain high standards of practice.
Contribute to the development and improvement of prescribing pathways, annual review processes, and service delivery.
To succeed as our ADHD Ongoing Care Prescriber, you will:
Demonstrate advanced IT proficiency and digital literacy, with the ability to work effectively in a remote environment and confidently utilise a range of digital health platforms and systems. You will be capable of autonomously managing an independent caseload, exercising sound clinical judgement, strong organisational skills, and effective prioritisation of workload.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, with the ability to build rapport and engage effectively with patients, colleagues, and external stakeholders through remote consultations, telephone contact, and written correspondence. You will possess a good understanding of relevant legislation, professional standards, and current developments in ADHD assessment, treatment, and prescribing practice.
Experience of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams is required, alongside a compassionate, patient-centred approach and a non-judgemental, inclusive attitude. The role also requires proficiency in the use and interpretation of ADHD rating scales, validated screening tools, and clinical monitoring measures to support safe and effective patient care.
A strong understanding of safeguarding principles and procedures is essential, particularly within remote and digital healthcare settings. You must be able to identify signs of patient deterioration, risk, or distress, respond appropriately, and take timely action, including escalation to relevant services and direct patient contact where required, to ensure patient safety and wellbeing.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Registered Nurses
First-level Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN), or
First-level Registered Nurse (Adult, Children's or Learning Disabilities) with:
At least one year of post-registration experience within a secondary mental health service, or
Relevant post-qualification training in mental health (desirable).
Independent and Supplementary Non-Medical Prescribing (V300) qualification.
Minimum of one year's post-prescribing qualification experience.
Experience in ongoing prescribing is desirable but not essential.
Pharmacists
Registered Pharmacist with an Independent Non-Medical Prescribing qualification.
Minimum of one year's post-qualification experience within a secondary mental health service, or relevant further training.
Alternatively, a minimum of one year's post-prescribing qualification experience in ADHD or mental health service provision.
Experience in ongoing prescribing and the long-term management of patients is essential.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Further relevant training or qualifications in mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions.
Experience in remote clinical service provision or digital healthcare environments.
Experience with initiation/titration of ADHD medication is desirable but not essential and we will provide training to become a specialist prescriber.
