Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Addiction Counselor, reporting to the Clinical Director, is a full-time (40 hours per week), on-site counselor who provides individual and group substance use counseling as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, under clinical supervision. All work follows ASAM criteria, state and federal law, the counseling code of ethics, and SFRC's evidence-based practices, policies, and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage an assigned caseload and meet productivity expectations set by SFRC.
  • Facilitate substance use psychoeducation and counseling groups using evidence-based practices, including motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral approaches.
  • Provide individual substance use counseling.
  • Gather assessment information and contribute to ASAM level-of-care recommendations and treatment plans under clinical supervision.
  • Support relapse prevention planning, recovery skill-building, and connection to recovery support services.
  • Complete timely, accurate documentation in the electronic health record in accordance with BHSD standards.
  • Coordinate with the Case Manager and treatment team, and refer mental health concerns to licensed therapists on the team.
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision as required by the counselor's license.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training on SFRC's evidence-based practices and maintain fidelity to them.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of evidence-based practices for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, including motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral approaches.
  2. Working knowledge of ASAM criteria and level-of-care determination.
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  4. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Computer literacy sufficient to maintain compliance with BHSD (Behavioral Health Services Division) standards for computerized client assessments, the electronic health record, and data systems.
  6. Bilingual/bicultural (English/Spanish) preferred.
  7. Lived experience of recovery valued.
  8. Experience with co-occurring populations preferred.

Education and Experience:

  1. Current New Mexico LSAA or LADAC license.
  2. Associate's or bachelor's degree in a behavioral health or human services field, or as required by the license held.
  3. Experience working with people with substance use disorders; supervised practicum or internship experience counts.
  4. For individuals in recovery from SUD, a minimum of two (2) years of uninterrupted abstinence from alcohol and/or drugs.
  5. Current, valid New Mexico driver's license, clean driving record, and auto insurance.
