Job Title: Alcohol and Drug Counselor-Trainee

Job Classification: Non-Exempt

Supervisor: Lead SUD Counselor

Status: Full-Time

Pay Band/Wage Range: $24.09 - $35.86 (Pay Band 5) BOE

The goals of the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics program in MN are to 1) increase access to community-based mental health and substance use disorder services (particularly to under-served communities), 2)advance integration of behavioral health with physical healthcare, and 3) improve utilization of evidence-based practices on a more consistent basis.

Under the supervision of a Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor or a person exempt under Minnesota Statutes section 148F.11, the incumbent provides high quality, respectful direct service to clients receiving substance use disorder (SUD) services within our inpatient and outpatient SUD programs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with Managed Care Service Organization to obtain approval for chemical dependency services to prospective and current people per contract requirements
  • Provide direct chemical dependency services to inpatient and outpatient clients using group therapy, individual therapy, lectures, and other approved methods
  • Develop individualized treatment plans with assigned people we support
  • Document appropriate services via preparation of discharge summaries, treatment plans, progress notes, and other relevant means for each assigned person in the electronic health record (CREDIBLE)
  • Complete and submit DAANES as per the applicable prescribed procedure
  • Provide chemical dependency consultations services to outside agencies
  • Participate in Range Treatment Center multidisciplinary case staff meetings
  • Help promote positive interactions with employees from other agencies, the community, and within the Range Mental Health Center
  • Coordinate involvement with clergy, probation and other outside agencies/services of the people we support when appropriate
  • Provide coverage for other counseling positions as directed / assigned
  • Participate in public speaking engagements as directed / assigned
  • Represent the Range Treatment Center and assume other functions and duties as assigned by the Director of RTC
  • Act as a liaison to other Range Mental Health Center programs with regards to Chemical Dependency services and illnesses
  • Respond to inquiries regarding chemical dependency services either via phone, writing, or in person
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Able to formulate and prepare professional quality assessments, individual treatment plans, treatment summaries, progress notes, and other required correspondence or records in a timely fashion.
  • Must have knowledge of 12 step program and treatment theory
  • Assertiveness sufficient to complete positions essential functions
  • Able to attend to nonverbal cues from people in the therapy setting.
  • Able to maintain the confidentiality of interaction with people in the treatment setting and other relevant confidential information
  • Able to handle sensitive situations in a calm, professional manner.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks with sufficient flexibility to meet demands in a fluid and changing environment
  • Able to facilitate group interactions between people that are directed at therapeutic goals.
  • Ability to handle significant daily stress
  • Ability to read, write, and speak the English language

Education & Experience:

  • Temporary permit issued by the State of Minnesota to provide chemical dependency services
  • Participation in an accredited chemical dependency program
  • Two years of freedom from chemical usage problems
  • Philosophical approach consistent with Range Mental Health Center’s mission
  • Pass a Department of Human Services background check
  • CPR / First Aid certification required (training may be provided)
  • Current Minnesota driver’s license with acceptable driving record

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to operate a keyboard and mouse
  • Ability to lift 15 pounds
  • Sufficient vision to utilize a computer monitor, to inspect and monitor the physical outlay or each program, to monitor behavior and / or body language, and to inspect luggage, clothing, or packages of the people we support
  • Sufficient hearing acuity to accurately record or respond to another party both in person, on the phone, and in a group setting
  • Maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness and physical appearance
  • Ability to verbally communicate English in a manner that is sufficiently clear so as to be easily understood
  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older

About Range Mental Health Center

Range Mental Health Center (RMHC) was the first rural community mental health center in the United States and the first in Minnesota to provide services developed specifically for persons with serious and persistent mental illness. The Center was established in 1961 and was the 16th federally designated community mental health center in the nation, and the first in Minnesota.

Mental health services are provided each year to over 5,000 adults, children, and families. The service area of RMHC covers northern St. Louis County, and expands for more than 6,800 square miles.
