Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Social Assistance or Program Supervisor, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop, organize, implement, and facilitate educational, recreational, and social activities for residents of all ages (including school-aged children, youth, and adults).
  • Create and maintain a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for residents and families
  • Ensure all activities are age-appropriate, culturally inclusive, and are responsive to the diverse needs of residents (e.g., in-house and external tournaments, educational workshops, and holiday events)
  • Arrange, promote and supervise events on-site and off site, including coordinating transportation, equipment, promotional materials, facility bookings, group rates, and nutritional requirements
  • Complete monthly calendars, program plans, evaluations, participation records, critical incident reports, and other required documentation for management review.
  • Assist in facilitating resident and children’s meetings that support participation in service delivery, program planning, development, evaluation, and policy feedback
  • Prepare agendas, take minutes, and follow up on action items and recommendations from meetings.
  • Attend group outings with residents (children, youth, and adults), in collaboration with client programming staff leading the activity.
  • Monitor programs and activities to ensure established standards, safety protocols, and procedures are upheld by staff and residents
  • Provide feedback on programs and submits recommendations for program changes to Supervisor of Social Assistance or Program Supervisor
  • Work with Management to transition new hires and volunteer into their position.
  • Recommend the purchase of recreational supplies and equipment while maintaining storage systems and monitoring inventory levels
  • Report repairs and replacement needs of equipment and supplies
  • Maintain a welcoming environment in all program areas
  • Respond to parental or caregiver inquiries regarding children’s participation, behavior, and wellbeing, while actively promoting parental involvement.
  • Undertake special projects and assignments as required
  • Partner and liaise with community agencies to develop and implement enhanced literacy and life-skills programming for children, youth, and adults
  • Ensure all materials are gathered, organized, and ready ahead of each activity to support a smooth and efficient execution of the program.
  • Support resident engagement and inclusion in accordance with Toronto Shelter Standards and Housing First principles
  • Promote positive parent-child engagement and model supportive interactions

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreational and social programs within a social service setting, with a proven ability to serve clients of all ages (0 to 99) and a specific focus on adults, youth, and school-aged children.
  2. Experience supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
  3. Experience assisting individuals with diverse psychosocial, physical, educational, emotional, and environmental needs within a shelter or similar residential setting.

You must also have:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Operations, Case Management, Senior Management Teams, and community agencies to develop and implement programming for children, youth, and adults
  • Ability to establish and maintain a professional and effective working relationships with residents (adults, children, and youth), families, staff, and community partners
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Fundamental knowledge of domestic violence, substance use, mental health, and the Child, Youth, and Family Services Act (CYFSA)
  • Knowledge of behaviour management techniques for adults, children, and youth
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills, with the demonstrated ability to manage and resolve complex situations
  • Ability to work flexible hours (i.e. days, afternoons, evenings and weekends).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Experience with conflict de-escalation and crisis response in a residential or community environment

Shift Information

  • Part-time employees must be available for day, afternoon, and evening shifts across four (4) days per week, including a minimum of two (2) weekend days (Saturday and Sunday).
  • Scheduling is determined by operational needs.
  • There are no guaranteed minimum hours per pay period.
  • All shifts are on an as-needed, part-time basis (Sunday–Saturday), ranging from approximately 3 to 8 hours in length.
  • Shifts may be scheduled in advance or assigned same-day or on-call.
  • Training may be scheduled during days, evenings, or weekends.

Work Location

  • Shifts are assigned based on portfolio and may take place across multiple sites within that portfolio.
  • Portfolio assignments are determined by operational requirements and site needs, and may involve travel between locations.
