Job Description

Position Title: Research Consultant Quantum Computing
Department: ACENET
Position Type: Full-time, No fixed end date (subject to external funding)
Salary Range: $68,959 to $79,568
Posting Date: June 9, 2026
Closing Date:
Will remain open until filled

This is a full-time position with no fixed end date, subject to external funding.

ACENET is seeking a Research Consultant in Quantum Computing to assist academic and industry clients in understanding, evaluating, and applying emerging quantum computing technologies alongside advanced computing resources (HPC, AI, Cloud) available through ACENET and the Digital Research Alliance of Canada.

This role is focused on enabling early exploration and responsible adoption of quantum computing, rather than hardware development or theoretical research. The successful candidate will have access to quantum computing platforms to support hands-on experimentation and applied projects.

ACENET’s central mission is to help researchers and innovators get their work done more efficiently by providing access to advanced computing resources and making those resources easier to use.

As quantum computing moves from research toward early applied use, organizations are increasingly seeking guidance on where quantum technologies may become relevant and how to begin exploring potential applications. In this role, you will help build foundational capacity in Atlantic Canada by supporting early-stage exploration, training, and applied experimentation in quantum computing.

You will work closely with academic researchers, students, and industry partners and contribute to building the region’s emerging quantum computing community. As a new position, the role offers a significant opportunity to grow and shape ACENET’s quantum service offering in response to regional needs.

This position will appeal to an early-career professional who is curious, motivated, and comfortable working across both academic and industry environments, with an interest in translating emerging technologies into practical use.

Core Responsibilities
  • Support academic and industry clients in exploring potential applications of quantum computing, particularly in optimization, simulation, and hybrid quantum–classical approaches;
  • Assist clients in designing and implementing early-stage quantum computing projects, including feasibility studies and proof-of-concept work;
  • Develop and deliver introductory training, workshops, and information sessions on quantum computing concepts and tools;
  • Contribute to ACENET’s quantum computing events and outreach activities;
  • Evaluate emerging quantum computing platforms and tools in collaboration with the ACENET technical team;
  • Support access and use of quantum computing resources, including cloud platforms and simulators;
  • Write and maintain technical documentation and training materials; and
  • Participate in national and regional initiatives related to quantum computing, including collaborating with the quantum team at Calcul Quebec.
Background and Skills

As the ideal candidate, you will have a graduate degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, or a related discipline, with demonstrated coursework in quantum computing. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

You are comfortable working in a rapidly evolving technical field and motivated by helping others understand and apply new technologies.

You must have:

  • Familiarity with quantum computing concepts (qubits, quantum circuits, quantum annealing, or hybrid quantum–classical methods);
  • Experience with scientific computing, HPC, or data-intensive computing environments;
  • Programming experience in Python (experience with quantum SDKs such as Qiskit, Cirq, or similar is an asset);
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly;
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities; and
  • A strong client-focused mindset.
Assets
  • Exposure to quantum computing platforms, simulators, or cloud quantum services;
  • Experience with HPC systems, GPU computing, or cloud computing environments;
  • Experience in an academic research environment;
  • Experience developing or delivering technical training or workshops;
  • Familiarity with Linux-based scientific computing environments; and
  • Fluency in both French and English.

Benefits

This is an opportunity to join a small, highly collaborative team that helps people use advanced computing in their research and innovation work. ACENET has a strong culture of continuous learning, practical problem-solving, and supporting clients from first question to real outcome.

In this role, you will contribute directly to building quantum computing capacity in Atlantic Canada and helping organizations explore the practical relevance of emerging quantum technologies. You will also gain exposure to national initiatives through ACENET’s partnership in the Digital Research Alliance of Canada.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position includes annual vacation, personal days, sick leave, tuition support, health benefits, and a pension plan.

To apply for this opportunity, click the "Quick Apply" button and upload your cover letter and resume as a single combined PDF document (maximum 6 MB). Only one file can be uploaded per application.
