What you will be doing:
As an Accounting Technician, you will provide financial and accounting support to the Department of Health by:

• Using GAAP and the State of Alaska Administrative Manual in daily work
• Working with teams across the department to follow our internal policies
• Keeping transactions accurate and on schedule
• Staying up to date and compliant with the State of Alaska’s accounting systems

Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies in addition to the minimum qualifications listed below:

  • Accounting Knowledge of traditional accounting practices including accrual, obligations, and cost methods.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Cost Accounting: Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and methods of cost accounting, including the use of historical cost, market value, or present value to measure cost; methods for assigning cost to accounting periods; and cost allocation, cost accrual, depreciation, and unit cost.
  • Oral Communication: Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens effectively; clarifies information as needed.

Examples of duties

Two years of technical level accounting or bookkeeping experience, of which at least one year was at the full-proficiency level.

Substitutions:
Certification as an Accounting Technician from an accredited college will substitute for one year of the required experience at the non-full-proficiency level.

Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for up to one year of the required experience at the non-full-proficiency level (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours in Accounting.

Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required two years of experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 9 semester/12 quarter hours at or above the 200 level in Accounting.

An associate’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration from an accredited college will substitute for the required two years of experience if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours at or above the 200 level in Accounting.
