Southeast Georgia Health System is seeking a detail oriented Accounting Specialist to join our Finance and Accounting team. This role is ideal for accounting professionals with experience in payroll, accounts payable, general accounting, and financial reporting who thrive in a fast paced healthcare environment.
As an Accounting Specialist, you will play a critical role in supporting payroll operations, AP functions, month end close activities, journal entries, and financial record accuracy.

Key Responsibilities
- Assists the Payroll Supervisor with the processing of payroll for the Health System and ensures all work is completed in a timely manner
- Resolves payroll issues with department leadership as needed.
- Reviews the team member time sheets for accuracy and completeness, making necessary corrections not handled by the department leadership.
- Prepares miscellaneous deductions, such as jury duty, garnishments, and tax levies with proper documentation for payroll.
- Prepares the information necessary for processing any mini payroll
- Assists with the preparation of the 941 tax deposits.
- Completely crossed trained for all payroll functions and performs as back-up in the absence of the Payroll Supervisor.
- Copies all in house (non-patient) checks made out to the health and makes remote deposits via scanner
- Verifies hours on time sheets by preparing regular audits on selected departments after each pay period, and ensures that Payroll/Human Resources policies are being followed.
- Reviews new hire and change of status forms received from Human Resources and prepares and processes required documents to record payroll information.
- Checks all departments in time and attendance to ensure accuracy for the Health System
- Prepares the check requests which are due after each payroll including bank deposits, credit union, garnishments, child support, and tax levies and resolves any issues in a timely manner.
- Assists with month end closing by preparing journal entries, account analysis, monthly responsibility reports, and any other information needed relating to all entities of the Health System. Maintains and updates Fixed Asset Accounting package for assigned organizations
- Performs other duties as assigned within the Finance - Accounting department
What you will need:
- Associate's degree preferred or equivalent experience
- 3 years accounts payable or payroll experience
- 2 years general accounting experience
- Knowledge of basic accounting principals
- Excellent interpersonal and telephone etiquette skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft office including word, excel, and email, as well as ability to operate office equipment including fax machines and copiers
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently
