Job Description

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day fiscal operations of a work unit or a group of accounting functions; supervises and performs the most complex accounting duties, including purchasing, accounts payable, cost accounting, payroll administration, year-end audit, cash management, and accounting that requires knowledge of specialized rules and regulations. Additionally, the Accounting Manager supports the validation of the company’s financial status by developing and implementing systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying, and reporting information in order to help achieve fiscal goals.

Position open in the Santa Barbara area. Full-time position with benefits and starts out between $86,340.80 - $104,499.20 annually.

Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises a work unit or a group of employees in the Fiscal department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned

  • Maintains the company’s chart of accounts and general ledger configuration.
  • Prepares technical fiscal reports, staff reports, time studies, analyzes program fiscal operations, identifies opportunities for increased fiscal effectiveness and efficiency, and develops and implements solutions.
  • Provides technical guidance on difficult accounting problems; reviews and approves the work of subordinate staff.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities, and procedures relating to financial management, budget, accounting, and/or payroll.
  • Supervises and participates in the preparation and review of various financial statements and reports.
  • Prepares and reviews monthly accrual and standard journal entries.
  • Oversees payroll processing and recording in the general ledger; maintains payroll records.
  • Leads month-end closing of the general ledger.
  • Oversees purchase order processing and disbursements to vendors and other parties.
  • Prepares and reviews monthly balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Assists with the preparation and implementation of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Verifies the accuracy and completeness of all accounting master data.
  • Supports CapEx planning, maintains assets, and assures compliance with corporate policies.
  • Directs and participates in cost analyses and rate studies.
  • Directs internal and external audits involving review of accounting and administrative controls, and financial reporting.
  • Establishes system controls for new financial systems and develops procedures to improve existing systems.
  • Directs the installation and maintenance of new accounting, timekeeping, payroll, inventory, property, and other related procedures and controls.

Knowledge, Skill and/or Ability Required

Education and/or Experience Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience and two year supervisory or administrative experience.

Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Computer Skills To perform this position successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Accounting software (Blackbaud Financials desired); Contact Management systems; Database software; Human Resource systems; Internet software; Inventory software; Order processing systems; Payroll systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Current valid California Driver’s license required, Certified Public Accountant license highly desirable

Other Skills and Abilities Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with all levels within the Agency.
