Job Description

ACCOUNTING MANAGER

Location: Brampton, ON
Department: Finance & Accounting
Reports To: Director, Finance & Accounting

We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Accounting Manager to lead the accounting function for a dynamic organization. This role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring financial accuracy and compliance, driving process improvements, and providing leadership to a high-performing accounting team. The successful candidate will play a key role in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and strategic financial initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Oversee general ledger activities and maintain the integrity of financial records.
  • Review and approve bank reconciliations, subledger reconciliations, and related accounting schedules.
  • Analyze revenue and expense variances, identifying trends and recommending corrective actions.
  • Monitor capital expenditures and prepare fixed asset reconciliations.
  • Review and approve payment processing activities, including electronic funds transfers, wire payments, and cheque runs.
  • Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and billing functions as required.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and other financial analyses to support business decisions.
  • Coordinate the preparation and submission of financial consolidation packages while ensuring compliance with reporting deadlines.

Planning, Controls & Compliance

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and quarterly forecasting activities.
  • Establish, maintain, and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and financial reporting guidelines.
  • Monitor accounting performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain complete and accurate financial documentation and records.
  • Stay informed of legislative and regulatory changes affecting financial operations and recommend process enhancements where appropriate.

Payroll, Compensation & Program Administration

  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure accurate calculation and distribution of employee compensation.
  • Support the administration of incentive compensation programs, including bonus and commission plans.
  • Generate and validate reports required for compensation calculations and payouts.

Audit, Procurement & Asset Management

  • Coordinate internal and external audit activities and serve as the primary finance contact during audit engagements.
  • Support procurement processes by reviewing and approving purchasing recommendations and bid evaluations.
  • Oversee fixed asset tracking, depreciation schedules, and asset inventory management.
  • Manage business insurance programs and ensure adequate coverage is maintained.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the accounting team.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and develop team members to support ongoing growth and performance.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, coaching discussions, and career development planning.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead departmental meetings and communicate organizational objectives and priorities effectively.
  • Manage departmental budgets and approve employee business expenses and travel requests.
  • Oversee attendance management and workforce administration processes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned.
  • Support organizational objectives through cross-functional collaboration and continuous process improvement efforts.

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Professional Designation

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA designation (or equivalent professional accounting credential) required; candidates nearing completion of their CPA designation will also be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting or finance leadership experience.
  • Proven success managing and developing high-performing teams.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting standards, financial controls, compliance requirements, and reporting practices.
  • Experience leading budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and audit activities.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with ERP and financial management systems; familiarity with SYSPRO is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling capabilities.

Leadership & Communication Skills

  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and team-building abilities.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to align financial strategies with organizational objectives.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present financial information to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Effective organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Working Environment

  • Standard work schedule of 35 hours per week, with flexibility to work additional hours during peak periods and key financial cycles.
  • Office-based role within a professional corporate environment.
  • Extensive use of computers, financial systems, and communication technology.
  • Hybrid/remote work eligibility may be available in accordance with company policy.
