Accountant (Mid-Level)

INDUSTRY: Healthcare / Health Services
LOCATION: Lagos, Nigeria (Mainland/Island)
REPORTING TO: Finance Manager / Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-Time (On-site)
SALARY BUDGET: ₦500,000 – ₦600,000 Net (Monthly)
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 3 - 5 years relevant experience (Minimum 2 years post-NYSC; post-ICAN qualification mandatory).


We are seeking a highly competent and detail-oriented Mid-Level Accountant to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the financial health of our healthcare operations, ensuring strict compliance with Nigerian accounting standards (IFRS), tax regulations, and internal controls specific to the medical industry. This role requires a proactive professional with a strong command of financial reporting, budgeting, and cost management in a fast-paced clinical environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Financial Operations & Bookkeeping

  • Manage the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of invoices, payments, and expense reports in line with approved budgets.
  • Monitor cash flow and ensure optimal liquidity for operational needs.

2. Revenue Cycle Management (Healthcare Specific)

  • Oversee the reconciliation of patient billing, insurance claims (HMO/Retainer), and receipts.
  • Monitor revenue streams from outpatient, inpatient, and pharmacy services.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in patient accounts and insurance receivables.

3. Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and present accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow).
  • Assist in the preparation of management reports, providing variance analysis and commentary on financial performance.
  • Ensure the integrity of financial data through rigorous internal controls.

4. Budgeting & Cost Control

  • Assist in the annual budget preparation and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Monitor departmental expenditures against budgets, specifically tracking medical consumables and drug costs.
  • Analyze costs to identify areas for cost savings and operational efficiency.

5. Taxation & Compliance (Statutory Reporting)

  • Ensure full compliance with Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and LIRS regulations.
  • Compute and remit VAT, WHT, PAYE, and CIT on a timely basis.
  • Prepare and file all statutory returns (e.g., ITF, NSITF, Pension) accurately.
  • Act as the primary liaison with external auditors and tax consultants during audits.

6. Asset & Inventory Management

  • Maintain the Fixed Asset Register (FAR), ensuring proper depreciation and capitalization.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of medical and pharmacy inventory, ensuring proper stock valuation (FIFO/Weighted Average).

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1. Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree (BSc/HND) in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Professional Certification: Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA/ACCA) – Mandatory (Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience).
  • Experience: 3 – 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years specifically within the Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, or Medical Services industry in Nigeria.

2. Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in IFRS and Nigerian accounting standards.
  • Expert knowledge of Nigerian Tax Laws (VAT, WHT, PAYE, CIT) and Pension Act.
  • Strong experience with ERP/Accounting Software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, SAP, or specialized Health Management Information Systems).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, and Financial Modeling).

3. Behavioral Competencies

  • Pressure Management: Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines (month-end/year-end closures).
