Join the professional, service-oriented Auditor-Controller’s Office and play a key role in leading the County’s Accounts Payable function. This position is responsible for ensuring the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of payments; maintaining the integrity of supplier and financial records; preparing statistical and financial reports; and supporting required external financial reporting.

This is a career-advancing opportunity for an accounting professional who demonstrates sound judgment, strong attention to detail, and the ability to objectively review, analyze, and process payment requests submitted by County departments. The successful candidate will apply accounting principles, internal controls, and governmental accounting practices to ensure expenditures are properly supported, classified, authorized, and reported.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

• Maintain accurate and complete supplier records, ensuring information is current and supports accurate payment processing.
• Administer the County’s credit card purchasing program, including verifying the availability of funds, reviewing transactions, and ensuring expenditures are properly classified and supported.
• Review and process payment requests from County departments with a high degree of accuracy, consistency, objectivity, and sound professional judgment.
• Evaluate, develop, and strengthen internal controls related to payment processing, disbursements, and financial transactions to safeguard public funds and promote compliance.
• Prepare and submit a variety of financial and regulatory reports to agencies including the State Controller’s Office, State Treasurer’s Office, California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service.
• Assist with accounting and financial reporting activities, including reconciliations, research of discrepancies, and other activities supporting the accuracy and completeness of the County’s financial records.
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with County departments, suppliers, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders.
• Establish and maintain productive working relationships through collaboration, professionalism, responsiveness, and a strong commitment to customer service.

The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical and organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to independently exercise sound judgment when evaluating financial transactions. Experience with governmental accounting, particularly accounts payable, disbursements, payment processing, and financial reporting, is highly desirable.

Supplemental information

Level I:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 semester units in accounting.

or

Associate's degree in Accounting or Business Administration from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 9 semester units in accounting and two years of experience performing duties equivalent to those of an Accounting Technician in Nevada County.

or

Completion of a concentrated accounting certificate program that includes a minimum of 20 units of accounting from an accredited college or university (such as UC Davis's Certificate of Accounting program) and five years of work experience in the field of accounting comparable to Nevada County's classification of Accounting Technician.

Level II (in addition to the above):

In addition to the above, two years of experience in governmental accounting at a level equivalent to Nevada County's classification of Accountant-Auditor I.
