Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and committed Accountant to join our dynamic and innovative organization. The Accountant will be part of a team with financial integrity as its goal to support Project Harmony people and programs. The Accountant’s role will include responsibility for preparing accurate and timely financial information and working closely with the Finance Team in the review and analysis of this information. This position will be tasked with month-end financial statement processing and monthly grant tracking, allocation and reporting. The Accountant will work directly with the Finance Manager and collaborate with program and agency leaders to ensure that details for financial allocations, grant accounting, budgets, and projections are accurate, timely, documented and relevant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare journal entries and cost allocations for posting to the general ledger to ensure financial statements are accurately presented
  • Reconcile bank accounts monthly and perform related journal entries
  • Process cash receipt and deposit transactions
  • Support payroll and grant accounting processes assigned
  • Reconcile and prepare financial support for general ledger accounts and recommend adjustments where necessary; assist in identifying trends in account activity and financial presentations
  • Follow timely month-end procedures for processing accurate financial information
  • Assist the Finance Manager with the annual financial audit process and work with the independent auditors
  • Assist in financial policy updates for the agency that reflect best practices in the field
  • Keep current on accounting and auditing standards
  • Maintain technical knowledge and acquire new accounting skills to ensure Project Harmony is fully adhering to non-profit and industry standards
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, as needed, to maximize the quality of work within the duties and responsibilities listed
  • Ensure culturally competent services are provided without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, disability, gender or sexual orientation
  • Complete special projects and other accounting-related duties as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required in accounting or finance or related field

Experience and Training

  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience required
  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrate attention to accuracy and detail to reduce the amount of accounting corrections required
  • Exercise strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel, and experienced with accounting software with modular processing platforms
  • Conceptualize how financial data should be processed and organized based on the audience
  • Own a solid knowledge of fiscal management systems
  • Possess excellent analytical skills in order to provide feedback on more efficient ways to track or report financial data and assess the reporting needs of each program area
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills (written, verbal and active listening)
  • Prepared to build relationships and work collaboratively with co-workers, vendors, donors and business partners
  • Exhibit a self-starter attitude and work independently as well as part of a team
  • Demonstrate strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Bring an exceptional work ethic
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality

  • Position may involve some travel, primarily within the state

About Project Harmony Child Protection Center

Project Harmony Child Protection Center is a community-based organization providing child-friendly, centralized and integrated child abuse assessment and investigation for children throughout eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Project Harmony works with state human services and local law enforcement agencies to protect the child and prosecute the offender. This past year, 8,064 children sought services at Project Harmony.

Since the opening of Project Harmony in 1996 more than 64,000 children have received vital services in prevention and child abuse assessment, investigation and treatment referral. Prosecution rates have increased and abused children and their families are able to get professional help in the process of healing.

The Project Harmony Training Institute was established in 2007 and since that time more than 30,000 students, citizens and professionals have been taught the best methods to assess and respond to children and their families who have been impacted by abuse and neglect.

Project Harmony and its partner agencies work together to serve families throughout the communities of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. This collaborative effort provides effective, immediate and sensitive support to child victims and their non-offending family members, improved communication and case resolution.
