The Accountant plays a key role in supporting the company’s financial operations by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing and assisting with financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in accounting principles, hands-on experience with general ledger functions, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. This role also contributes to continuous process improvements, supports internal and external audits, and provides mentorship and technical guidance to junior accounting staff.
This position is well suited for a CPA candidate seeking to further develop their technical expertise and advance their professional accounting career. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, highly organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting
- Prepare components of the monthly financial statements in accordance with IFRS, regulatory standards,
and internal accounting policies, consistently meeting established internal reporting deadlines.
- Prepare and analyze investment accounting results, including reconciliations of investment income,
realized/unrealized gains and losses, and related balance sheet accounts.
- Proactively identify errors or discrepancies in accounting results, assess root causes, and recommend
resolutions.
- Maintain comprehensive working papers and supporting documentation suitable for regulatory review and
audit.
- General Ledger Management
- Assist in the general ledger accounting process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and
month-end/year-end closing activities.
- Ensure the accuracy and completeness of general ledger accounts responsible for.
- Identify recurring reconciling items or process inefficiencies and recommend corrective actions to improve
accuracy and timeliness.
- Controls
- Ensure compliance with insurance regulatory requirements, internal policies, and applicable accounting
standards.
- Assist in identifying control gaps, emerging risks, or regulatory concerns related to insurance accounting
and propose mitigation strategies.
- Support internal and external audits by responding to inquiries and providing supporting documentation.
- Compliance
- Prepare components of periodic returns.
- Innovation & Improvement
- Identify opportunities to enhance accounting processes through automation, standardization, and system
improvements.
- Participate in initiatives to improve efficiency, accuracy, and control over accounting processes.
- Customer Service
- Provide accurate, timely, and professional accounting support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Respond to inquiries, corrections, and disputes from internal stakeholders, ensuring compliance with policies and
safeguarding data integrity.
- Clearly explain accounting concepts and financial results to non-finance stakeholders.
- Collaboration, Communication, & Teamwork
- Coordinate with other teams to ensure complete and accurate financial reporting.
- Proactively communicate potential risks, issues or reporting impacts to management.
- Leadership & Development of Others
- Mentor and support accounting staff in insurance accounting concepts, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Review work prepared by others, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to accounting standards.
- Participate in special projects, process improvements, and system implementations.
- Model accountability, professionalism, and attention to detail, particularly during financial reporting cycles.
- Maintain and enhance technical knowledge of insurance accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and
industry practices.
- Goal Setting
- Set and manage goals aligned with finance department strategic objectives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting.
- Proficiency in financial software.
- Familiar with Canadian accounting principles and eager to further develop expertise.
- Knowledge of the insurance industry is an asset.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
- Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel) is required.
- Fluent in English with proven competencies in verbal and written communication is required.
- Fluent in French with proven competencies in verbal and written communication is an asset.
- Successful completion of employment, credit, criminal, education background checks including employer reference and verification before employment is required.
