Job Description

The Catholic Parishes of South Washington County are currently seeking a part time accompanist for the churches of St. Augustine (Williamsport), St. James (Boonsboro) and St. Joseph (Hagerstown). The accompanist is responsible for playing the piano for principal Sunday celebrations, Holy days, weddings & funerals and possibly some practices at the direction of the Music Director. Travel between the three churches may be required for some Masses. The stipend is per event.

Essential Functions:

  • Play the piano for principal Sunday celebrations, Holy days, weddings, funerals
  • Arrive for Masses in advance to go over any music as requested, without detracting from the quiet prayer of the assembly.
  • Attend rehearsal times on instrument as directed by the Director of Liturgical Music.
  • Continuously update professional competence and liturgical education as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in piano is required.
  • Education and/or experience in Catholic liturgy and liturgical documents on sacred music.
  • Virtus training must be completed and kept up to date.
  • Ability to work with Director of Liturgical Music, cantors and choir for weekend Masses, Holy Days and devotions.
  • Strong awareness of the role of the accompanist at Catholic liturgies: ability to determine if instrument is too loud or too soft and adjust; accordingly, ability to play instrument at proper tempo and with a level of proficiency that encourages assembly to sing and that adds to the sense of the sacred music.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills to perform job duties.

Range: $100.00 stipend
