Job Description

The Accessioning Technician is responsible for opening, identifying specimens, entering data into the Laboratory Information System, preparing specimens for testing, and transporting specimens to the correct department in the laboratory.

Essential Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with resolving accessioning issues to include, but not limited to, requisition discrepancies missing information and/or other accessioning related client issues.
  • Receive specimens from multiple daily deliveries, auditing delivery and signing packages.
  • Accession patient specimens according to Company’s standard operating procedures, with strict adherence to our Quality Assurance standards
  • Review, understand and execute customer-specific requirements for order entry
  • Accurately and efficiently data enter required patient and specimen information into the LIS system.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens for testing, labeling specimens accurately.
  • Maintain adequate departmental inventory.
  • Adhere to and uphold all applicable federal and state compliance regulations as well as Company’s compliance policies and procedures, accrediting agency policies and procedures, and applicable healthcare fraud, waste, and abuse laws.
  • Work closely with the Client Services team to resolve and escalate incomplete or unclear order issues and promote good customer service.
  • Must be able to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced high-volume environment.
  • May be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, fumes, loud noises, and blood-borne pathogens.
  • Must be able to work under stress and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Emergent situations could extend working hours or require infrequent weekend work.
  • Files all pathology slides and tissue block daily in the designated storage system.
  • Maintains organization of slide and block storage areas at all times.
  • Keeps accurate and documented chain of custody records for all specimens, slides, and blocks handled.
  • Performs and documents daily humidity and temperature checks in the storage area to ensure proper environmental conditions.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree is required. If hired, you will be required to provide a copy of your college transcript.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one year experience

Equipment:

  • Computers, computer programs, information system(s), photocopiers, scanners, facsimile machines, and telephones.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Good understanding of laboratory information systems and automated laboratory equipment.
  • A critical thinker with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding analytical abilities.

HIPAA/PHI Security Level: HIGH (Low, Medium, or High):

Indicate the security access level of Protected Health Information (PHI) as necessary to perform essential key responsibilities of the position (access, utilize, disclose, store, and/ or dispose of PHI).

1. Low –information access is of general nature representing summary type data rather than specific identifiable demographic or sensitive data.

2. Medium – information access is specific to an individual’s demographics and service information (type of service, services received, dates of service, and provider of service).

3. High – information access is detailed and sensitive to an individual’s demographics, service information, and personal medical history (past/present medical conditions, specifics of medical diagnosis or tests, treatment plans, and family history).

Work Hours:

Two Shifts available:

  • 7:00 p.m. - 3:30 a.m. (Monday - Friday )
  • 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday)
