Job Description

UWB-IT is seeking dependable, detail-oriented student employees to assist with improving the accessibility of course materials in Canvas. This role involves performing straightforward remediation tasks on documents, images, and other course content to ensure they meet accessibility standards and performing a detailed quality assurance pass on AI-remediated materials. An ability to spot and reliably document error is essential. No prior accessibility or AI experience is required as training will be provided. We encourage students from all majors to apply.

This position pays $21.30 an hour.

GENERAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Academic and Collaborative Technology the employee will:

• Use the Ally accessibility tool in Canvas to identify common accessibility issues in course materials
• Perform quality assurance tests on AI-remediated materials, including producing careful documentation of types and quantities of errors, which is used for process improvement
• Learn and follow established accessibility guidelines (e.g. WCAG 2.1 AA) and remediation procedures
• Perform routine remediation tasks such as adding alternative text to images, correcting heading structures, linking to PDF replacement files, and improving document formatting
• Perform quality checks on remediated courses and summarize remaining issues
• Document all completed work accurately, including summarizing files reviewed and changes made
• Flag complex accessibility issues for review and/or summary by supervisor or full-time staff
• Communicate with supervisor and team about progress, questions, and any challenges encountered
• Collaborate with other student assistants to coordinate work and share information
• Support other accessibility-related tasks or projects as assigned

All new student employees must also complete UW's online Title IX course about preventing and responding to sex-and gender-based violence and harassment.

HOURS

• Typically 10 to 15 hours per week, with a maximum of 19½ hours per week during an enrolled quarter
• Flexible scheduling; significant in-office work required, though limited work may be completed remotely

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a current UW student enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate credits for the quarter
• Evidence of strong attention to detail
• Ability to evaluate and balance tradeoffs; ideal candidate will make steady progress on project through targeting immediately addressable issues while not getting caught up in complex remediations
• Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks accurately and in a timely manner
• Able to clearly document work, and communicate any technical or procedural challenges encountered
• All new student employees must also complete UW's online Title IX course about preventing and responding to sex-and gender-based violence and harassment.
• History of successfully working independently and as part of a team
• Basic familiarity with common document types (Word, PDF, PowerPoint)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with detail-oriented quality assurance work, such as fact-checking, inventory reconciliation, or any other activity related to catching and documenting errors.
• Experience with accessibility remediation or experience using a Learning Management System to construct course materials
