Nature of Assignment Writing Instructor

Assignment description Woodsworth College invites applications for the position of writing instructor. Instructors can expect to see students with writing assignments from a variety of disciplines. Instructors may also be asked to deliver group instruction on general writing skills or in writing across the curriculum skills.

Estimated Number of Positions 1

Hours of Work: Contracts vary in size depending on applicant seniority, availability, and the Centre’s needs, but typically range from 50 to roughly 200 hours; more hours may be added later if demand warrants.

Schedule Information: Hours will be scheduled by mutual agreement in due course, depending on the needs of the Centre. Instruction will be conducted both in-person and online, and applicants must be available for on-campus teaching.

Sessional dates of appointment September 1, 2026, to April 30, 2027

Salary:

Writing Instructor 1: $ 56.46 per hour, excludes vacation pay

Writing Instructor 1 Long Term: $60.69 per hour, excludes vacation pay

Writing Instructor 2: $60.69 per hour, excludes vacation pay

Writing Instructor 2 Long Term: $62.14 per hour, excludes vacation pay

Writing Instructor 2 (Priority): $62.48 per hour, excludes vacation pay

Writing Instructor 2 (Priority) Long Term: $63.96 per hour, excludes vacation pay

Minimum qualifications: A Master’s degree plus relevant experience teaching writing one-on-one and/or teaching in university courses with a significant writing instruction component; having both kinds of experience would be a strong advantage.

Preferred qualifications: PhD, familiarity with Woodsworth College’s specific programs and student body, training and experience in writing instruction across disciplines and second-language instruction at the university level.

of duties: The chief duty of instructors in the Writing Centre is to tutor students individually on university writing in all disciplines, especially on response to the assigned topic, use of sources, organization, argumentation, style, and proficiency with language. Instructors may also tutor students on study skills such as time management, note-taking, and test and exam preparation. Instructors’ contracts will include tutoring and may also include hours for delivering workshops or webinars on writing and study skills.
