Job Description

Assists in planning, directing, and supervising the activities of the Academic Department. Provides accurate administration of the Academics function to ensure Department of Labor Policy compliance.

  • Ensures Job Corps-approved curriculum is being taught in individual classrooms.
  • Projects and plans for instructional needs. Ensures proper teaching methods are being employed for the subject area being taught.
  • Ensures adequate class size (student-teacher ratio).
  • Prepares and submits reports as required.
  • Participates on all required committees.
  • Jointly, with the Career Technical Training Manager and Academic Manager, is responsible for: counseling students about schedules; scheduling entering students and making schedule changes for others; composing, printing, and distributing weekly master schedule, master summary, and students’ copies of individual schedules.
  • Ensures proper records on students’ progress, performance, etc. are maintained by the instructors and proper record of students’ attendance is maintained by the Academic Department, utilizing the CIS Attendance Watch report.
  • Makes recommendations to the Manager on all changes to policies and procedures pertaining to the Academic Department.
  • Analyzes data from questionnaires, interviews, group discussions, etc., to evaluate curriculum teaching methods and community participation in education and other programs.
  • Assists in developing and implementing a planned orientation program for new instructors and provides for in-service training of all departmental staff.
  • Assesses personnel needs and works with the Human Resources department to screen and interview potential staff. Recommends promotions, transfers, and merit evaluations within the department. Conducts and prepares performance appraisals.
  • Clearly communicates and consistently models appropriate Career Success Standards and employability skills.
  • Maintains accountability of staff, students, and property.
  • Adheres to safety practices in all areas of responsibility.
  • Fosters and sustains a conducive environment at the center, ensuring it remains free from harassment, intimidation, and disrespect, thereby ensuring a safe space for both staff and students to engage in work and learning.

Qualifications

Qualification and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university.
  • Certified to teach in state in which center is located preferred.
  • One to three years related experience required.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with diverse population of youth.

A valid driver’s license in the state of employment with an acceptable driving record.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general business periodicals and professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, peers, students, and the general public
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane, solid geometry, and trigonometry
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
