Job Description

General Summary

Directs and implements instructional and school liaison plan for child and adolescent clients and coordinates planning for appropriate educational services upon discharge.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Determines appropriate curriculum for instruction, whether educational therapist-planned and/or school curriculum.
  • Develops lesson plans, long-term or short term, using commercial or teacher-made materials, to meet students’ educational needs.
  • Teaches classroom sessions with groups of students as designated by the Director of Educational Therapy or Program Director. In these scheduled sessions, addresses students’ academic, emotional, and behavioral needs.
  • When assisted in classes by program staff, designates level or type of involvement of these staff persons.
  • Upon admission, gathers educational history and recent school functioning from school contact person. Identifies school concerns. Obtains school’s recommendations for discharge planning.
  • Discloses appropriate information to school personnel about client’s admission to the treatment program. Informs school contact about services the client will receive in the program and about plan for future contacts.
  • Provides treatment updates to school contact as needed.
  • Communicates educational therapy observations/recommendations and discharge information to school contact or provides educational therapy observations/recommendations to case counselor conducting the discharge meeting with school personnel.
  • Documents calls to schools and completion of procedures on Ed. Therapy cover sheet checklist.
  • Completes daily progress notes for the medical record.
  • Completes Homebound Instruction Reports for school districts.
  • Completes Educational Therapy Summaries, Diagnostic Reports and/or other reports or correspondence as necessary.
  • Documents discharge call, as indicated on school profile, for the medical record.
  • Brings school-related observations and concerns to team meetings.
  • Participates in treatment team meetings or rounds as determined by the Director of Educational Therapy or program director.

  • Consults/communicates as needed with program staff to collaborate on school-related issues.
  • Communicates regularly with support staff to facilitate efficient, accurate completion of ed. therapy procedures.

Common Expectations:

  • Meets regularly with supervisor for feedback, support, and to process concerns.
  • Initiates and participates in professional conference opportunities. Shares relevant information and materials gained from these experiences with other educational therapists and program staff.
  • Participates in Educational Therapy Consortium seminars or school observation days as scheduled by the Director of Educational Therapy.
  • Assists in orienting new educational therapists.
  • Meets with visiting groups or individuals as requested by the Director of Educational Therapy or Program Director to provide information about Ed. Therapy services.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree Required
  • Masters Degree Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 1 year Previous experience and expertise in the area of therapeutic communication and psychological dynamics. Required

Licenses:

  • Certified Teacher Upon Hire Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.
  • Analytical abilities.
  • Visual ability to monitor student activities and review and prepare written materials.
  • Office skills (word processing, email, voicemail, internet).
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities that enable the effective delivery of specialized educational experiences to children and adolescents.
  • Knowledge of and ability in the care and support of specific client groups.
  • Must have access to a private vehicle and must maintain WellSpan Philhaven Driving Privileges.
