Position will end on or before June 30,2027. Permanent status cannot be earned in this grant funded position. This Temporary appointment can be concluded prior to the stated temporary appointment end date, normally with a two-week notice period. Continuation of this temporary appointment is contingent upon grant funding.

Monday through Friday; from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm

Anticipated Hiring Range

$4,575.00 - $5,083.00 per month ($54,900.00 - $60,996.00 annually)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Funded by a U.S. Dept. of Ed. grant, the SOAR TRIO (Student Outreach and Academic Retention Student Support Services Program for Health Sciences / TRIO) Program serves between 160-180 students annually, consisting of low-income, first-generation and students with a disability within the College of Health and Social Sciences (CHSS).

Under the direct supervision of the SOAR TRIO Administrative Lead, the SOAR TRIO Academic Advisor provides the following support and services to participants who are in CHSS majors ranging from freshman to senior: proactive academic advising, guidance, and retention support to encourage participant academic success; holistic assessment of the academic, career, and/or personal needs of participants to offer appropriate services and resources; assistance with transcript review, financial aid application, declaration of major/change of major, completing academic requirements, class registration, and graduate school exploration and resources; assists participants to complete program milestones, forms, and records; appropriately advocates for needs of participants to University entities/offices; assists to resolve problems that affects participant’s ability to succeed in their educational and career pursuits; makes appropriate referrals to campus support offices; assists with the creation and execution of program workshops, community building activities, tutoring support efforts and other activities as assigned; and is a liaison to internal and external campus partners and the public at-large.

This is a grant-funded, full-time temporary three-year maximum position. The duration of the appointment cannot exceed three years from the date of hire and is reliant on continued grant funding.

Position Information

Academic Advisement/Counseling

• Provide support on General Education, pre-major, probation, career, personal and/or other types of one-on-one or group holistic advising/counseling to SOAR TRIO participants interested in pursuing a health and/or social science related major in CHSS.
• Create education plans with SOAR TRIO participants aimed to support them holistically while balancing the realities of major impaction, rigor, and application pre-requisites, as applicable.
• Act as a resource in interpreting campus, CHSS, and Education Department policies to students, staff and faculty.
• Utilize technologically innovative methods for advising, counseling and coaching SOAR TRIO participants.
• Create and conduct workshops focusing on topics such as: course planning, General Education, major/career exploration, major requirements, nursing and/or health career pathways, financial literacy and educational financial resources, FAFSA information and application, graduate school information, application, and resources, and SOAR TRIO orientation.
• Help maintain appropriate and confidential records for staff and participants and provide updates on caseload, especially on program milestone completion, retention, cohort performance, and other required grant funding conditions, and to supplement yearly program evaluation requirements.
• Seek out and stay current on internal and external best practices in academic advising, counseling, mentoring, student career pathways support, and changes to major/field requirements for majors served by SOAR TRIO.
• Attend campus, college and departmental trainings and meetings as it relates to policies, procedures and advising.

Coordinate and Manage Student Success Initiatives

• Work closely and professionally with campus partners, including the SSS-TRIO Program, Undergraduate Advising Center, EOPP, Guardian Scholars, Metro, CA Promise, etc., to coordinate and align participant support efforts, maintain professional communication, stay current on practice/policy changes, and attend trainings/meetings.
• Develop and/or maintain professional ties with the various on-campus offices that support students, such as: CHSS, Registrar, Admissions/Evaluations, Bursars, Financial Aid, Enrollment Management, Student Outreach Services, Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies, TASC, Counseling Psychological Services, etc.
• Support Program Lead to support student success initiatives as outlined in current grant application.

Program Outreach and Recruitment

• Support Program Lead to identify and recruit low-income, first-generation, and/or students with a disability in social or health science majors in CHSS on a rolling basis to ensure program retains and support a sufficient number of participants.
• Support Program Lead to outreach and develop rapport towards longstanding professional relationships with local high schools, community based organizations, TRIO programs, and other organizations who serve similar populations where incoming at-risk CHSS students can be identified and recruited to SOAR TRIO
• Participate in and represent the SOAR TRIO program at outreach and recruitment efforts via presentations and/or attending college fairs, tabling events, SF State Explore, New Student Orientations, Welcome Sessions, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience

• Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
• A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field.
• Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Knowledge and Albitites

• Knowledge of and ability to apply fundamental concepts.
• Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
• General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
• General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
• Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
• Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
• Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
• Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
• Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required;
• Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts/partnerships.
• Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, policies, regulations and programs of the campus, CHSS, and Student Support Services-TRIO.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Sciences, Counseling, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience advising students with academic, social, and personal challenges; demonstrated ability to assess student needs in these three areas.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in presenting or facilitating workshops, career counseling, case management, and/or crisis intervention.
• Experience working with issues and obstacles similar to those confronting program participants.
• Experience planning academic support and retention initiatives.
• Knowledge of undergraduate and graduate school application requirements, CHSS majors, and transcript evaluation.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Highly proficient with use of computers (PC and Apple), Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel and Outlook), cloud computing and
• storage (box), Canva, working use of social media applications (Instagram, Facebook, etc.), and working knowledge of CSU systems, like
• EAB (Education Advisory Board), CS (campus Solutions), Canvas, and Docusign/Adobe Ink.
• Ability to network effectively with faculty, staff, campus officials, community organizations, and schools.

Physical work on campus is required; this is not a remote position.
