The University of Arizona's College of Science invites you to apply for the role of Academic Advisor II. The Academic Advisor plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention and persistence by building formative relationships with students to encourage engagement with opportunities to develop personally and professionally.

This position is built for professionals who are interested in joining a Strategic Advising Team and receiving comprehensive cross-training to develop expertise across a family of majors (e.g., Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical & Computational Sciences, etc.). These student-centered, collaborative Academic Advisors will provide high-quality advising across departments while maintaining consistency with college-wide advising standards and departmental expectations.

As members of a collaborative college-wide advising community, these advisors help ensure students receive accurate, timely, and coordinated support regardless of major, while increasing the College's ability to adapt to growth and evolving student needs.

The position reports centrally to the College but has strong connections to the departments it serves. The College of Science brings together students with a wide range of interests, from environmental science to medicine and technology, who are driven by curiosity and discovery. Students learn from internationally recognized faculty who lead groundbreaking research and contribute to advancements in scientific knowledge and teaching practices. Through hands-on research opportunities and mentorship, students develop creative solutions to complex global challenges while working within a collaborative academic environment. The college’s mission emphasizes research excellence, interdisciplinary learning, community outreach, and the preparation of future scientists across core scientific disciplines.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work assignment in consultation with the supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising & Student Development Duties:

• Presents academic and program information to new first-year and transfer students and their guests at New Student Orientation and processes students for readmission.
• Guides students through academic planning, degree requirements, and university policies.
• Applies transfer credits from other academic institutions to student’s degree programs (based on established articulation rules and precedents).
• Builds meaningful relationships through proactive advising and individualized student support.
• Supports orientation, retention, and graduation initiatives.
• Identifies or evaluates options for students who must petition for an exception to a course or program requirement; makes approved adjustments to students’ programs of study.
• Monitors academic progress of students utilizing existing dashboards and reports; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and connects students with campus resources that promote academic success and well-being.
• Assesses students’ stage of development (academic, career, and personal) to promote academic growth by recommending suitable developmental tasks and engagement opportunities.
• Helps students identify pertinent internships, club involvement opportunities, and volunteer opportunities.

Advising Program & Additional Student Support:

• Provides input to the department on student achievements for award considerations or on student barriers encountered during advising sessions. This information may be used by various departmental undergraduate committees.
• In collaboration with leadership, may assist with leading seminars, workshops, and other activities/events for student onboarding, building community, academic recovery, student engagement, graduation, and/or student retention as time allows.

Administrative:

• With leadership, may update materials to help students more easily navigate their degree paths, such as four-year plans and course checklists.
• Assists with manual enrollment into department courses, including research, preceptorships, and internships for university credit.
• Processes degree audit worksheets for students planning to graduate. May have College signatory authority on degree audit worksheets.
• May assist with the
  planning and implementation of college and department events.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required.
• Three years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and
  work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in higher education.
• Experience advising or working with undergraduate students.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University’s campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
