Job Description

The Academic Advisor provides academic advising to undergraduate students majoring in or minoring in History, assists with related academic administrative matters and
supports various special programs within the Department.

Examples of work include meeting with undergraduate majors each semester to discuss course selection, degree requirements, academic progress and graduation planning; reviewing academic records and remove advising holds to enable students to register for courses; and representing the Department of History at orientation programs by presenting information about the major, degree requirements, academic opportunities and departmental resources.

Physical Demands: Typical office environment requiring the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. May occasionally require some walking to different locations on campus for meetings. May require the need to lift up to 25 lbs.

Licenses/Certifications: N/A

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two (2) years of professional experience in academic advising, student services, student affairs, or higher education teaching.


Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the higher education landscape, degree planning and academic policies.

Knowledge of curriculum structures, course sequencing, and graduation requirements.

Knowledge of FERPA and student privacy regulations.
Knowledge of campus resources, support services, and referral processes.
Skill in oral and written interpersonal communication.

Skill in organization and time-management to manage multiple student caseloads and competing priorities.
Skill in using student information systems, databases, and Microsoft Office or similar software.

Skill in data tracking and recordkeeping with attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to interpret, explain and apply academic policies and procedures.

Ability to employ active listening, problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Ability to analyze student records, identify barriers to success, and develop action plans.

Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support student success.
