The Academic Advisor-Athletics position will provide a small number of student-athletes with critical writing support, while working to improve their reading and vocabulary skills so as to make them more effective college-level writers. This position will also oversee those students in various required study hall sessions.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review all academic objectives of the assigned students prior to each study sessions. (25%)
  • Teach and promote study skills, including but not limited to note-taking, reading comprehension, and test-taking strategies. (25%)
  • Teach and promote time management skills. (25%)
  • Assist in referring assigned students to the appropriate support personnel. (20%)
  • Provide weekly reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics or to student-athlete’s assigned athletic advisor. (5%)

CONTACTS

This position will require consistent communication with the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and the student-athlete’s assigned athletic advisor to discuss the latter’s academic progress. This position will require, at times, communication with appropriate coaches and support staff, as coordinated by the Assistant Athletic Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED Supervise student-athletes on a consistent basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Office environment (sitting, standing, walking, typing)
  • Occasional nights & weekend work

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess excellent writing, communication and editorial skills.
  • Knowledge of basic college-level writing as well as an understanding about the nature of writing for an academic audience is required.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and positive teacher/student relationship.
  • Must be able to assess the academic preparedness and writing skills of the assigned students and then enact an academic enhancement plan.
  • Adherence to all NCAA, Atlantic-10 and University rules and regulations is required.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred in a liberal arts discipline.

SCHEDULE: Hourly, less than 20 hours per week. Monday through Friday, some evenings and weekends.

Pay Range: $15.00 to $22 per hour, non-exempt
