Yadu Health Aboriginal Corporation is a not-for-profit, community-controlled health service providing primary health care to Aboriginal communities in Ceduna, Koonibba and surrounding areas.

For more than 30 years, Yadu Health has delivered affordable, accessible and culturally safe health care, with a strong focus on improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our services are delivered through a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, including Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners, nurses, GPs, visiting specialists and allied health professionals. Yadu Health also operates a fully accredited 24-hour residential aged care facility.

About the Role

Yadu Health is seeking motivated and community-minded Aboriginal Health Worker Trainees to join our Primary Health Care team.

This is an opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining practical experience within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation while working towards a recognised qualification in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.

Working alongside experienced Aboriginal Health Workers, Practitioners and other health professionals, you will develop the skills and knowledge required to support culturally safe, holistic health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, families and communities.

Throughout your traineeship, you will receive practical workplace experience, supervision, mentoring and support to develop your career in Aboriginal health.

No previous experience as an Aboriginal Health Worker is required. We are looking for people who are passionate about their community, interested in health and wellbeing, and committed to learning and developing professionally.

Key Responsibilities

As you develop your skills and experience, you will:

• Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to access culturally safe primary health care and health services.
• Assist experienced Aboriginal Health Workers and health professionals with client care, health checks, screenings and health promotion activities.
• Support clients and families to understand and navigate health care services and available community supports.
• Assist with health education and activities that promote healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and early intervention.
• Build respectful and trusted relationships with clients, families and community members.
• Participate in community outreach, events, health promotion activities and engagement initiatives.
• Support culturally appropriate communication between clients, families and health professionals.
• Assist with patient recalls, referrals, appointments and follow-up activities.
• Learn to maintain accurate and confidential client records and documentation.
• Participate in workplace training, mentoring, professional development and formal study requirements associated with the traineeship.
• Work collaboratively with Yadu Health’s multidisciplinary team while developing the knowledge and practical skills required to become an Aboriginal Health Worker.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

• Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (desirable).
• Has a genuine interest in Aboriginal health, community wellbeing and supporting positive health outcomes.
• Is willing to commence and successfully complete a recognised qualification in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care as part of the traineeship.
• Is committed to learning, developing new skills and participating in both workplace and formal training.
• Has a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and communities.
• Can communicate respectfully and effectively with clients, families, community members and colleagues.
• Has the ability to build positive and trusted relationships within the community.
• Can work effectively as part of a team and follow guidance from experienced health professionals.
• Has good organisational skills and is willing to learn computer systems used for client records and documentation.
• Holds a current Class C Driver Licence or equivalent, or is able to obtain one.
• Holds, or is willing to obtain, a Working with Children Check, National Police Check and Aged Care Sector Employment Check.
• Holds a current First Aid Certificate, or is willing to obtain one.
• Has current immunisations, or is willing to participate in Yadu Health’s staff immunisation program.

Previous experience in health, community services, customer service or working with Aboriginal communities will be highly regarded, but is not essential
