Job Description

Able Seafarer Deck

Responsible to: Chief Officer/CPO Deck
Reporting officer: Chief Officer/CPO Deck
Works closely with: Launchman, CPO Deck, CPO Science, PO Deck
Salary - £34,623 per annum

Purpose

  • Safe handling and operation of all deck and scientific deck equipment.
  • Safe handling of cargo and stores.
  • Maintenance and cleanliness in the deck department.
  • General seamanship duties.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To operate deck machinery as directed by a Deck Officer or Petty Officer.
  • To assist in safe rigging, deployment, recovery and stowage of scientific equipment.
  • To assist with maintenance and cleanliness of the ship as directed.
  • To undertake cargo operations including safe loading, stowage, lashing, discharge of cargo, scientific equipment and stores.
  • Participate in the preparation, operation and maintenance of boats as required.
  • To assist in mooring and anchoring duties as required.
  • To stand Bridge/Deck watches and ship-keeping duties in port as directed.
  • General seamanship duties as required.
  • To undertake any other duties consistent with the key responsibilities and duties of the post, as directed by the Master.

Skill Specification

Essential

  • Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) or Equivalent without restrictions
  • Deck Able Seafarer Certificate of Proficiency STCW II/5 - Issued or Accepted by MCA
    *An Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) Certificate & Navigation Watch Rating STCW II/4 may be acceptable in place of the Able Seafarer (Deck) Certificate of Proficiency STCW II/5 in exceptional circumstances. Candidates with an EDH ticket must demonstrate substantial, relevant experience to meet the operational requirements of the role.
  • STCW basic training to STCW 2010 (PST, FPFF, EFA & PSSR)
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSC&RB)
  • Demonstrate success in a relevant work environment, backed by evidence of appropriate specialist knowledge.
  • Knowledge & understanding of COSWP and ISM.
  • A basic knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972
  • An understanding of wheel orders given by pilots in English
  • Knowledge of rigging a pilot ladder
  • Knowledge & experience of duties for mooring & towing operations
  • Knowledge of anchoring
  • Knowledge of dangerous cargoes
  • Knowledge of stowage procedures and arrangements for bringing stores on board
  • Knowledge of deck maintenance and of tools used on deck
  • A desire for advancing the BAS Vision & Mission and achieving strategy
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff
  • Strong and independent problem solving skills
  • Practical maintenance skills
  • An effective team player able to build working relationships with deck team and ship staff, scientists and technicians
  • Obtain medical clearance for Polar service from BAS Medical Unit (BASMU)
