80% Ophthalmic Technician - University Campus-(26003207)

University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, is seeking a 80% Ophthalmic Technician (GC84; 09) to perform an extensive number of routine and advanced technical procedures, as delegated by the physician, to collect medical data and assist in patient care. Responsible for day-to-day operations and interaction with patients to obtain medical histories and precise measurement and documentation of:

  • Visual acuity
  • Manual lensometry
  • Confrontational visual fields
  • Stereopsis
  • Motility
  • Pupillary function
  • Color plates
  • Applanation tonometry
  • Humphrey visual field
  • Topography
  • Pachymetry
  • Tear Testing
  • OCT
  • IOL master
  • LenStar

Responsibilities may also include scribing for physicians, and assisting physicians with clinical procedures Duties to include:

JOB PERFORMANCE

  • Performance of Procedure
    • Performs functions and diagnostic testing such as visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, eye drop installation, topography, auto-refraction, tear-testing, and other tests as appropriate to the assigned subspecialty clinic.
    • Enters data into computer.
    • If needed, scribing for physicians entering medical information into Epic, the Electronic Medical Record.
    • Reads lens corrections from lensometer.
    • May perform tonometry, applanation, refraction, visual acuity testing and eye drop instillation.
  • Aseptic Technique
    • Uses procedures, skills, techniques to prevent cross contamination and transmission of infection according to infection control standards, policies, and guidelines.
    • Cares for patient with known or potentially contagious infections according to written protocols.
  • Care of Supplies and Equipment
    • Keeps exam room stocked with necessary supplies.
    • Maintains and calibrates equipment properly.
    • Uses supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient manner.

WORK HABITS

  • Documents patient information regarding testing.
  • Prepares charts for next day’s clinics. Assures proper billing documents are completed and turned in to Billing.
  • Completes assignment, seeks assistance when necessary and assumes responsibility for special duties or tasks assigned.
  • Maintains professional appearance.

  • Demonstrates punctual and dependable attendance at work.
  • Considers patient and staff needs when requesting time off; gives adequate notification when absence is expected.
  • Maintains safe environment for patients and visitors.
  • Attends in-service education programs.

  • Uses appropriate organizational lines of authority.
  • Accepts constructive criticism.

CONDUCT TOWARDS PATIENTS

  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains a courteous and respectful approach towards patients and visitors.
  • Reports unusual patient incidents, complaints, or concerns.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follows university, hospital, and department policies and procedures.
  • Respects the confidentiality of patients and visitors.
  • Respects staff confidentiality.
  • Assists co-workers as needed.
  • Reports to work at scheduled time and returns from lunch and 15-minute breaks on time.
  • Limits annual sick leave to reasonable amount.
  • Notifies supervisor if ill or delayed, and calls in at beginning of scheduled shift for each day absent.
  • Requests future absences in accordance with collective bargaining agreement and department policy.
  • Interacts with other employees and the public in a positive manner.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • Performs projects within the agreed-upon time unless an extension is requested and approved.

***External hires only, in addition to your base salary, we are offering a sign-on incentive of $1,500, payable in one installment. The payment will be made on the first of the month following completion of 60 days of employment. Should you terminate employment within 24 months, you will be responsible for the prorated repayment of the sign-on incentive. The signed agreement will be processed upon hire. Current UI employees are not eligible.***

Percent of Time: 80%

Schedule: PRN Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm

Location: UI Health Care, Iowa City

On Campus: This position is performed fully on campus.

Qualifications

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Three years of health care experience involving direct patient care including some use and maintenance of specialized medical equipment with at least one year of the prior experience at the level of a Clinical Technician II or equivalent, or a combination of related education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Eye clinic experience
  • JCAHPO certified (COA) within 18 months of hire, and maintain certification.
  • Pediatric experience is highly desirable.

Special Qualifications

  • Experience with Medical Terminology
  • Experience with Public Contact/Customer Service
