Role Responsibilities

When Albertans hit the road—whether in a snowstorm, during wildfire season, or on a holiday weekend—they count on reliable, up-to-the-minute information. As a 511 Alberta Officer, you'll be part of the team ensuring that timely updates reach travellers through our website, app, phone system, and social media. Your decisions and communication directly influence safety, mobility, and peace of mind across the province. This is fast-paced, meaningful work that matters—every single shift.

As a 511 Alberta Officer you’ll analyze incoming information, coordinate with field and emergency teams, and deliver real-time updates to the public. Your ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and respond rapidly will be key to ensuring accurate and trustworthy messaging. Whether responding to traffic disruptions or weather-related events, you’ll play a vital role in shaping how Alberta moves.

Your key responsibilities include:

• Monitoring highway conditions, weather systems, and traffic activity using data feeds, cameras, social media, and radio.
• Verifying reports submitted by contractors, consultants, Parks Canada, and Alberta Transportation staff, ensuring accuracy before public release.
• Updating the 511 Alberta platforms—including alerts, maps, banners, and pop-ups—in response to incidents, changing conditions, and scheduled events.
• Engaging with stakeholders, emergency responders, and the public to collect, confirm, and respond to information and inquiries.
• Responding to public and media questions via email, phone, and social media using a professional, informed, and tactful tone.
• Collaborating with meteorologists, regional operations, police, and emergency agencies to coordinate highway communications.
• Troubleshooting issues with 511 Alberta systems (web, app, IVR, cameras), logging and reporting any deficiencies to vendors or technical teams.
• Training contractors, partners, and new team members on information reporting tools, standards, and 511 Alberta best practices.

This is a rotational shift-based position, including evenings, weekends, overnights, and holidays, as part of a 24/7 operation. Flexibility is essential, especially during major incidents or weather events.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards:

• Two-year technical diploma in a related field (e.g., Dispatch, Emergency Management, First Responder); no experience required or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

• Experience in emergency response, transportation operations, logistics, or public communications.
• Thorough knowledge of programs offered through the 511 Alberta site, such as the Alberta Carrier Education Course for commercial bus and truck carriers regulated under the National Safety Code program in Alberta.
• Previous call centre or high-volume public inquiry experience, particularly in fast-paced or service-oriented environments.
• Proficiency in using digital platforms, mapping tools, and social media applications.

Notes

Term of employment: Full time, Permanent.

Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week, scheduled on a rotational basis to support 24/7 operations. Shifts include: 6:45 AM – 3:28 PM, 2:45 PM – 11:28 PM, and 10:45 PM – 7:28 AM. This includes evenings, weekends, overnights, and holidays.

Location: Edmonton, Alberta.
