Location: Long Bay Hospital (LBH), Malabar

Employment type: Temporary 3 days per week for 6 months with possibility of extension

Salary:

• Psychologist: $83,898 – $118,318pa.
• Specialist Psychologist: $120,464 - $139,824pa
• Plus environmental allowance, employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

About Long Bay Hospital:

Long Bay Hospital (LBH) is situated within the Long Bay Correctional Complex in Malabar. The hospital section is a maximum-security facility that accommodates patients requiring medical, psychiatric, and aged-care services. It provides a range of specialist healthcare services, including mental health treatment, medical observation, post-operative care, haemodialysis, and aged, rehabilitative, and palliative care. Some patients are subject to involuntary treatment under the Mental Health Act 2007 as forensic or correctional patients.

The LBH 2 section is a 300-bed remand centre that accommodates both protection and mainstream inmates. It also includes a segregation unit and safe cells for managing inmates with specific security, behavioural, or welfare needs.

About the Role:

Your role will involve working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver direct psychological services to people in custody. This includes conducting psychological assessments, developing case formulations, and providing evidence-based interventions for individuals with complex needs. You will receive support, professional guidance, and clinical oversight from the Senior Psychologist, contributing to both your professional development and the delivery of high-quality psychological care.

Working collaboratively with custodial staff, case managers and other professionals, you'll help develop effective case plans and behaviour management strategies. Your assessments, reports and recommendations will inform rehabilitation outcomes and key decision-making.

Please note, this role provides a supportive learning environment, including access to AHPRA-approved supervision for psychologists undertaking Clinical Registrar Program.

Key tasks:

• Operating as part of a team of psychologists provide direct psychological assessment, intervention, and therapeutic services to offenders and remandees within LBH 1 and LBH 2.
• Assist in the formulation of management and case plans to support the effective management and supervision of offenders and remandees within the centre.
• Provide crisis intervention, risk assessment, and psychological support to inmates in specialised units.
• Participate actively in multidisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and clinical discussions regarding offender management and treatment planning.
• Collaborate closely with Justice Health nurses, medical officers, and psychiatrists, including attending psychiatric review meetings to discuss and manage complex mental health presentations.
• Work within a broader multidisciplinary team comprising Services and Programs Officers, Case Management staff, and Custodial Management, providing psychological consultation and advice on complex cases.
• Maintain accurate, succinct, and timely psychological documentation and case notes in accordance with established standards on the Offender Integrated Management System (OIMS) and within case files on EDRMS.
• Prepare pre-sentence reports, structured case notes, and other psychological reports as required.
• Contribute to the delivery of psychologically informed services aimed at supporting offender wellbeing, risk management, rehabilitation, and reintegration outcomes.

• Managing appropriate priorities in the work in the face of high caseloads and work volumes
