Job description
Training and Policy Lawyer – Crime specialist (2 x roles)
Legal Team (within the Judicial Education and Digital Learning Team), Judicial College
This is standardised wording and cannot be amended.
The Judicial Office (JO) reports to, and is accountable, to the Lady Chief Justice (LCJ). It was established in 2006 to provide support to the LCJ and to the wider judiciary in upholding the rule of law and in delivering justice impartially, speedily and efficiently, following the Constitutional Reform Act 2005.
In addition, we support, and are accountable to, the Senior President of Tribunals, whose responsibilities extend to Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The JO is an interesting and unique place to work. Everything we do is in support of upholding the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. We work closely with HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and others across Government as well as with the legal professions.
We are an Arm’s Length Body sponsored by the Ministry of Justice. This creates an interesting and complex environment in which to work where we agree our priorities with the senior judiciary and receive our funding to deliver them from the Ministry of Justice. The Judicial Office has been through a period of significant growth resulting from an expansion of our remit and responsibilities.
Magistrates and legal advisers play a vital role in the effective administration of justice and are key to supporting future system needs.
Following a comprehensive review of our training provision, including digital delivery and partnership working, the Judicial College is strengthening its support for increased recruitment and retention needs, ensuring that magistrates and legal advisers are confident, competent and representative of the communities they serve.
Hybrid Working Requirement
This is standardised wording and cannot be amended.
This position is eligible for hybrid working (current minimum requirement for time spent at base location is 60%, which is subject to business requirements).
We are seeking two candidates with the authority and expertise to design and deliver accurate, engaging training, lead national projects, and work with senior stakeholders to shape and prioritise magistrate and legal adviser training that meets their needs.
Reporting to the Head of Legal Team within the Judicial College, the Training and Policy Lawyers (Crime) will be key members of the Legal Team, part of the wider Judicial Education and Digital Learning Team, designing and delivering training and responsible for leading projects within their jurisdictional area.
The successful candidates will work with other parts of the Judicial College - including other parts of the Judicial Education and Digital Learning Team, Magistrates Training Delivery Team, Planning and Operations, and Publications - as well as working across Judicial Office with Judicial HR, private offices and digital services. The relationship with HM Courts and Tribunals Service, our delivery partners, is critical.
