Location: National – (Any LAA Office)

Please note that whilst this role is open to all Civil Service staff, you can only apply for London, Cambridge and Brighton offices if you are a current LAA staff member based in those offices. This is due to and in line with the LAA's Location Strategy and the Cabinet Office's Places for Growth Strategy.

Please note that travel to other offices may be required

Minimum Working Pattern:

The post is supported by the MOJ flexible working policy and includes colleagues who work flexibly, remotely, part time or as part of a job share etc.

The Legal Aid Agency

We are an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). We areresponsible for operationally administering the legal aid fund to provide criminal and civil legal aid advice to people in England and Wales.

Corporate Services

The Corporate Services team helps shape and enable the priorities of the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership Team and People Committee to be delivered.

The LAA fully supports hybrid and flexible working. Members of the Corporate Services and the Strategy, Data and Analysis Team are based in multiple locations across England and Wales. Travel will be required on occasion.

Strategy, Data and Analysis Team

The Strategy, Data and Analysis Team supports wider Corporate Services to help shape and enable the priorities of the Chief Executive and Executive Leadership Team by providing data reporting analysis of the LAA’s progress against its strategic aims.

As a Senior MI & Data Analyst, you'll play a key role in helping the Legal Aid Agency make better decisions through the intelligent use of data.

Working with large and complex datasets, you'll identify trends, risks and opportunities, transforming information into meaningful insight that supports operational and strategic decision-making. Your analysis will help shape how the Agency delivers services and improves access to justice across England and Wales.

This is more than a reporting role. You'll work closely with colleagues across the LAA, Ministry of Justice and wider justice system to understand business challenges, challenge assumptions where appropriate and provide evidence-based recommendations that influence decision making.

You'll continuously look for opportunities to improve reporting, automate processes and enhance data quality, ensuring the Agency has trusted, accurate and timely information to support its priorities.

The role combines technical expertise, analytical thinking and strong stakeholder engagement, making it ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, influencing through evidence and driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

Deliver Insight

  • Analyse large and complex datasets to identify trends, risks, opportunities and emerging issues.
  • Produce accurate, timely analysis that supports operational and strategic decision making.
  • Present clear, evidence-based recommendations that enable informed business decisions.

Develop Reporting & Visualisation

  • Design, develop and continually improve Power BI dashboards, reports and analytical products.
  • Identify opportunities to automate recurring reporting and improve reporting efficiency.
  • Ensure analytical outputs are accurate, well documented and meet organisational quality standards.

Partner with the Business

  • Build trusted relationships with stakeholders across the LAA, MoJ and wider justice sector.
  • Understand business priorities and translate analytical requirements into practical solutions.
  • Communicate complex information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Improve Data Quality

  • Promote good data governance and analytical standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, consistency and accessibility.
  • Support delivery of the MoJ Data Strategy and encourage data-driven decision making.

Essential Knowledge, Experience and skills

  • Demonstrable experience using Power BI and Excel to analyse complex datasets and produce meaningful insight.
  • Experience transforming complex information into clear, evidence-based recommendations for a range of audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify trends, assess risks and recommend practical solutions.
  • Experience developing accurate, high-quality dashboards, reports or analytical products.
  • Experience building productive working relationships with stakeholders and understanding business requirements.
  • Understanding of data governance, information security and handling sensitive information.
  • Experience improving reporting processes through automation or continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to deadlines.

Desirable Knowledge, Experience and skills

  • Experience responding to Freedom of Information or Parliamentary Question requests.
  • Experience using SQL, Python, R or other analytical tools.
  • Experience using emerging analytical technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to improve efficiency and insight.
  • Understanding of the full data lifecycle, including collection, validation, analysis, publication and governance.
  • Experience presenting analytical findings to senior stakeholders.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.

Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles: All successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale. This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) – See Map All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity).

For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location’s respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.

The Ministry of Justice offers a flexible working system in many offices. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week.
