About the Role

This is a 12-month fixed term full time position at 86 hours per fortnight. Whilst employment will be through the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the location of employment will be based within the Immunology Laboratory of The Women’s and Children’s Pathology Service, starting February 2027. This immunopathology post is accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (100% core laboratory training).

You will participate in the day-to-day reporting of immunology laboratory tests at the RCH, under the supervision of the consultant immunopathologist. You will also provide direct clinical care to Allergy & Immunology patients at RCH, under the supervision of consultants in the Department of Allergy & Immunology.

What you’ll achieve:

  • Develop skills in the performance, analysis, troubleshooting, interpretation and reporting of immunology tests
  • Liaise with clinicians both within and outside RCH regarding immunology laboratory tests.
  • Assist with workload prioritisation in the laboratory and communicating critical and clinically important test results
  • Provide direct clinical care to allergy and immunology patients through two outpatient clinics
  • Participate in departmental and multidisciplinary meetings and education sessions.

Your skills and experience:

  • Current medical registration with AHPRA
  • At least 2 years of experience in a formal allergy & immunology training program or at least 1 year of experience in a formal immunopathology training program
  • Successful completion of the FRACP examinations or equivalent

About the Immunology Laboratory

The laboratory provides a comprehensive, high quality diagnostic immunology service to both The Royal Children's Hospital and The Royal Women's Hospital. In addition, patient samples are referred from other Victorian and interstate pathology services, as the Immunology Laboratory has particular expertise in complex assays required for the diagnostic workup of Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases.

The RCH Immunology Laboratory performs a comprehensive range of tests that includes:

  • Surface and intracellular immunophenotyping
  • Functional testing of lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes
  • Complement assays
  • Measurement of specific IgG responses to Tetanus and Pneumococcal vaccines.
  • Total IgE and allergen-specific IgE testing
  • Autoantibody assays for the investigation of systemic and organ-specific autoimmune conditions

  • Current National Criminal Record Check, or willing to obtain
  • Valid Working with Children Check

  • All International Medical Graduate applicants will need to meet the AHPRA English Language requirements
