Nashville General Hospital’s mission is to improve the health and wellness of Nashville by providing equitable access to coordinated patient centered care, supporting tomorrow’s caregivers, and translating science into clinical practice.
The nurse residency program promotes the mission of Nashville General Hospital, because supporting the nurse resident is supporting tomorrow’s caregivers. Furthermore, the nurse residency program will empower the nurse resident to translate the science of nursing into a developing professional nursing practice that will positively contribute to the health and wellness of the Nashville community.
Nashville General Hospital’s 9-month Nurse Residency Program (NRP) has been designed for all new Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree graduate nurses who have passed the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) or a new registered nurse with less than 6 months of experience. The Division of Nursing of Nashville General Hospital (NGH) has adopted the nurse residency program and the preceptor model for orientation and integration to the different specialty departments.
It is our goal to assist nurse residents to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that will enable successful transition from the role of a student nurse to the practice role of the professional nurse. It is the aim of the NRP to provide the education, training, and support crucial to the provision of safe, quality care in a collaborative environment that contributes to positive patient outcomes.
Nursing orientation will provide a solid foundation. You will develop confidence and competence in areas such as clinical nursing skills, communication, critical thinking, time management, and teamwork to successfully meet the standards of practice and the professional performance expectations of the Nursing Division of Nashville General Hospital. Your orientation will concentrate on your successful integration into the healthcare team.
Through the common vision shared by Nursing Leadership, the Nursing Education and Professional Development Department and the Preceptor Team, we will guide your transition to professional practice by supporting your orientation and ongoing professional development.
