Job Description

The Security Support Clerk provides security, access control, and customer service support to promote a safe and secure environment at assigned Atlanta Public Schools facilities. The position monitors building and parking-area activity, controls access to designated areas, screens and assists visitors, monitors security systems, and responds to routine security concerns in accordance with District policies and procedures. The Security Support Clerk supports security operations during meetings, events, drills, and emergency situations and may be assigned to various District locations based on operational needs. The position requires flexibility to work evenings, staggered shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency assignments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Georgia driver's license required

Experience:

  • 1 year of security, public safety, customer service, or related experience preferred
  • Experience in K�12 education or public sector preferred

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Monitors assigned buildings, parking areas, loading docks, entrances, exits, and other designated areas to identify and address potential safety or security concerns
  • Controls access to restricted areas and verifies authorization of employees, visitors, vendors, contractors, and vehicles in accordance with established procedures
  • Greets, screens, and assists visitors entering District facilities and provides directions and general information as appropriate
  • Monitors surveillance cameras, access-control systems, and other security technology and reports unusual or suspicious activity to appropriate personnel
  • Conducts routine security checks and assists with opening, securing, and closing assigned facilities
  • Monitors employee, visitor, and vehicle traffic and assists with maintaining safe and orderly movement through parking areas, garages, entrances, and other access points
  • Responds to routine security concerns and promptly reports incidents, hazards, unauthorized access, suspicious activity, and other concerns requiring additional assistance
  • Maintains accurate visitor records, security logs, activity reports, incident documentation, and other required records
  • Provides security support during District meetings, events, drills, exercises, and other activities at assigned locations
  • Coordinates and communicates with District security personnel, contract security staff, hourly employees, law enforcement, and other appropriate personnel regarding security operations and concerns
  • Assists with parking enforcement and investigates or reports unauthorized or improperly parked vehicles
  • Escorts visitors, guests, employees, or other individuals within District facilities when requested or when security circumstances warrant
  • Communicates security-related instructions, emergency information, and procedural guidance to employees and visitors as directed
  • Answers security-related telephone calls and responds to routine inquiries or directs matters to the appropriate personnel
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in person and be available to work on-site during regular business hours and as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator or their representative

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of security, access control, and visitor management practices
  • Knowledge of District safety procedures, emergency protocols, drills, and exercises
  • Knowledge of basic incident reporting and security documentation procedures
  • Ability to monitor surveillance cameras and other security-related technology
  • Ability to recognize, assess, and appropriately report suspicious activity, safety concerns, and security incidents
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with employees, visitors, law enforcement personnel, and the general public
  • Ability to provide professional and courteous customer service while enforcing security procedures
  • Ability to remain alert and exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations
  • Ability to work independently and use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive security-related information
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs, reports, and other security documentation
  • Ability to work flexible schedules and at multiple District locations as assigned

Salary Grade: 113
Salary Range: APS Salary Schedule (All Positions)
Work Year: Annual (252-day)

  • Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp, and manipulate small objects; //manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head
  • Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict
  • Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors
  • Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records.
